The headliner that got away.....

Dio & Sabbath . . . wow, that would have been amazing. I still like his work, and he has one of the most amazing voices ever. Dio would have been great.

Would he have supplanted Everygrey or Nevermore? I'm guessing Nevermore.

Steve in Philly

P.S. - As hard it is to read about the ones that got away, I'd love to hear some other "failed" attempts to sign big name bands.

Holy crap... I made a post at the PM board last year with my semi-realistic PP7 dream picks, and picked Dio-Sabbath for the night two headliner; "hey, it could happen..." was basically what I said half-jokingly. Damn, I never thought Glenn would actually go for something like that. Hats off yet again.

WOW!!! Now that would have been something!!! Dio at ProgPower... I must say that I have seen Dio live (Roseland in NYC with Doro and Malmsteen), and they put on a really good show. RJD is a real class act, and true to his fans.

That was a real surprise to hear Glenn...

All of you people that are saying they are glad this didn't work out, or that it's no big deal, or that Nevermore and Evergrey are better headliners are obviously leading sad, pathetic lives. I'll keep you in my prayers and hope you can find redemption (now, nobody make a Laser's Edge joke....this is serious here).

Reading through most of theses posts, I think people didn't recognize that the video was BLACK SABBATH, and NOT Dio solo. ;)

Yeah...dummy me....I snapped to that just after I posted and walked away from the pc. duh

I've been lucky enough to have seen Sabbath both with Ozzy and Dio, but I would never turn down a chance to see Dio era Sabbath again.

Dio is the man credited with starting the throwing of the horns after all! \m/

Agreed.

It's a huge deal and could have been as amazing as it gets. Talk about propelling our little show into the eyes of the masses.

Holy shit.

Thanks for trying Glenny. Amazing things do happen to those who wait... or at least those who keep trying like you have time and time again.

From a purely selfish standpoint, it would've been cool to meet & tech for Doug Aldrich - great guitarist !

Is he still comitted to Dio? Last I heard he jumped to the Whitesnake camp, unless that was just for the tour. Couldn't agree more on skills. Aldrich RIPS!

As a side note...Dio rarely tours the USA...and only hits northern big cities really...I have never seen him live (nor have I seen my favourite band...Iron Maiden)...so...

Ummm...well...

Like Walt said above...I can't believe that so many people haven't seen Dio. He tours (almost constantly) in the States, and generally makes an effort to have effective coverage, or get on a bill that will provide him decent coverage as well). I've seen Dio in shithole clubs and major arenas...and he always kicks ass! Man...my wife and I used to make the joke that we would see Ronnie several times a year (whether we really wanted to or not)...?

I'm not criticizing Mosquito at all...I wish to make that clear...

But...I see all the posts that talk about never seeing Dio live...and I have to wonder...are these the same assholes that bitch about having to see Sym X or Evergrey or Iced Earth or Nevermore or Helloween way too much...knowing full damn well that a lot of these so-called North American tours don't always make it "everywhere" in North America?...the same people that bitch about certain bands playing PPUSA because they "normally" tour North America? Well...guess what folks?...they don't come to everyone's neighborhood everytime...!

What about Nevermore?...hell...for that matter, what about Dream Theater?

Personally...I respect Glenn's balls for going after a Dio-or-Sabbath classic kinda thing that has some classic status...keeps people guessing....keeps things fresh for PPUSA (although I imagine that such a booking would have resulted in several "fuck classic rock" threads)...

Personally, if it was a Sabbath thing...I'm a big fan of all the Sabbath eras (Ozzy, Dio, Hughes, (Gillen), Martin, etc. Any particular kind of show would be very cool...!

Hey...as much as I like all the leaks...keep these little golden nuggets to yourself, Glenn...we'll all be surprised at the "twist-and-turns" you make within the metal genre in future years...just like we have been in the past.

Rock on!

I've seen Dio four times; in support of "Sacred Heart", in support of "Lock up the Wolves" and twice in support of "Killing the Dragon". That said, it would have been amazing to see him in the intimate setting that is Earthlink. And I think songs like "Last in Line" and "Rainbow in the Dark" would have blown the roof off the place, in a way that Earthlink has never seen.

Zod

I agree with ashaman and Zod. Anyone that thinks DIO would not have blown away ANY other headliner this year should give their head a shake cuz they're not thinking clearly.

DIO >>>> everyone else

I simply said that I had not seen him in concert (concert dates never worked out). I am not one to bitch about seeing any of those bands you mentioned "way too much" nor do I bitch about PPUSA bands that "normally" tour. I've driven 6 hours for many shows, so I make the effort.

I'm not into nostalgia at Prog Power, so I'm glad this Dio/Sabbath thing didn't happen. I prefer to see bands that are fighting their way thru the ranks, and don't have a mass appeal. I would much prefer to attend a Mercenary/Everygrey/Nevermore bill over a bill consisting of Dio and Maiden, or Anthrax and Priest ... etc. I'm way more interested in seeing current bands than oldies reunions. That's just me.

Oh come on, man! You were as into Conception last year as anyone on the floor. :tickled: They weren't a headliner though so it's not really a straight comparison. I don't think that one nostalgia band out of ten overall is too bad a ratio. Any more than that would be too much for me too.

It would have been cool to see Dio but I'm more than happy with both headliners.

Brent

Since you have revealed this info. Whats the possiblity revealing last years headline fall through?

I had the chance to see DIO live with IRON MAIDEN a few years back.:hotjump:

That's not a straight comparrison in a lot of ways. I don't really consider Conception to be nostalgic since their music was from the early to late 90's. They also had never played in the US before, and I think they are one of those bands that was very influential to a decent chunk of the fans that prog power was originally intended for. Dio should be headlining some fest of old schoolers like Accept, Metal Church, and Anthrax ..... not Prog Power. That's just my take though ... others probably see it differently and that's cool.
