The headliner that got away.....

I would have shitted my pants if I had heard Dio was headlining PPVI,that was awesome of you to even try(maybe next year he will show up!)Kudos to you man!

Dio is unquestionably a legend and you're basically guaranteed a great show with him on the bill. However, I would've been way more excited to see a Dio/Sabbath show than just a Dio show. Of course, the Dio/Sabbath option would've probably been 10 times more expensive anyway (and I'm sure Dio wasn't cheap by any means).

Not to blame you at all, but how can a Crimson Glory reunion fall thru ? You'd think these guys would be all over playing a festival that would put them on a pedestal for a weekend. They sold about 50 albums in their career (just kidding, but it was not a high amount at all), and have still somehow carved a niche among a genre of fans and a promoter than can provide them a forum to reign once again ... and they can't get their stuff together enough to get it done. Amazing! Correct me if it fell thru because of some family emergency, or something other than finances, or personal problems among or involving the band members.

There's always next year :) I will go see Dio anytime, anyplace. The man rocks like nobody's business - has a huge catalog, was doing the Evening with Dio in Europe which we didnt get here and is one of the most geniunely thankful people for his fans. Always a class act everytime I have met him. Truly a gentleman. I think if he were to be part of the PP experience where people who had never had a chance to see him or meet him got that chance - he'd win over a new batch of fans.

All Hail Glenn - and if it was the Sabs that you were referring to getting, Sweet Jeebus that would rule like a mother.

That's not a straight comparrison in a lot of ways. I don't really consider Conception to be nostalgic since their music was from the early to late 90's. They also had never played in the US before, and I think they are one of those bands that was very influential to a decent chunk of the fans that prog power was originally intended for. Dio should be headlining some fest of old schoolers like Accept, Metal Church, and Anthrax ..... not Prog Power. That's just my take though ... others probably see it differently and that's cool.

Britt

I'm with you on this one Britt. I've seen Dio live a few times and each time he has really been great. I'll keep seeing him when he comes to Detroit. I'm just not looking for something like that at Prog Power. Like you, I'd take a more current band over the old school stuff when it comes to Prog Power. And I agree that Conception doesn't exactly fall into that "old school" category - that was a totally different situation.

Doug did the Whitesnake tour, then went back to Dio for the balance of the European tour after Craig Goldy was injured (hand I think)... he RIPS !

Ok, that sounds kind of familiar (the injury thing)...
It's a drag when you get old and can't remember everything...:grin:
Yep, Doug does rip! I've been a fan since I heard BMR! :)

Thanks again Wayniac!

I simply said that I had not seen him in concert (concert dates never worked out). I am not one to bitch about seeing any of those bands you mentioned "way too much" nor do I bitch about PPUSA bands that "normally" tour. I've driven 6 hours for many shows, so I make the effort.

Make the effort...well put!

That sums it all up right there...that's what the true metalheads do...

Sure puts a dent in the annual travel budget, don't it?

Rock on!

Maybe next year's theme can be a kinda retro-PPUSA...

A little Dio, some CG, some Astral Doors (retro-Rainbow vibe)...trying to think of other bands that might fit that bill...hmmm...

Rock on!

Well said. Best of luck to anyone still holding out for a new Crimson Glory record (i.e. not a few songs kept in the can for 6 years) or tour. :Smug:

Agreed, Don't get me wrong, I love Dio, but I would much rather see a band that does not come around or has not been in the US.

If I'm going to travel far and wide, I want the memory to be very unique.

I'll always cherish the memory of seeing conception for the rest of my life!
Glenn you rule! :worship:

Glenn;

I am on my knees in worship. Going after Dio was, quite absolutely, pure genius. Even if you told me that Ronnie James DIo would only be singing a capella the names and addresses from the Atlanta Yellow Pages, I would gladly pay $900 for the weekend just to have the privilege of even being in the same building to hear him sing it. He is just one of the greatest all-around entertainers in metal, or all music for that matter, history.:worship: :worship:

To all;

I have had the privilege of seeing Dio three times: The first time was in 2002 when he played with Scorps and Deep Purple. The next time was when he supported Iron Maiden the next year. Finally, his show at the Beacon Theater in 2004 when Anthrax opened up for him. In each show, he would bring the house down. His voice you can just slide into a trance with. It is THAT amazing. Man, one could only dream about what could have been at Earthlink. Dio finishing off the festival would have been a sight to behold.

Peace,
Ray C.
