The last ever Therion US tour

I guess I wanted to throw in a word about AESMA DAEVA here since I'm friends with all of them and have seen them live at least half a dozen times if not more.

AESMA DAEVA is a very talented band and I've been on them about their stage performance before. Lori definitely needs to come into her own as a singer, but that will come with time. Also one wonders if management didn't warn her to hold back a little bit so that she had enough for a 90 minute Therion set ... I can only speculate.

What AD may lack as a live band in terms of "energy", I believe they make up for in song composition and emotion which I believe may be more effectively communicated via CD than live. I've never had a problem with any of their live sets, but I can see some of your points. For instance, this year at PP, COMMUNIC bored me to tears, but I've checked out their CD's and they are actually really good. So sometimes I think for some bands, a live set may simply not be their forte' but a CD may give a completely different experience.

Summary -- Matt, check out an AD CD which I'd be happy to GIVE you (I bought a whole bunch at their last show) and if you still don't like them after that, I won't be able to argue the point with you anymore.

Thanks. I could definitely see them translating better on CD than live, no doubt. There are plenty of bands like that, and many that are the reverse.

Yip and I have discussed this so much this fall. Epica would have been great touring with Within Temptation this year, or again with Kamelot, though I'm sure they don't want to end up always touring together. I think with Within Temptation they would have gained some new fanbase.

I would have loved to have seen Epica open for Within Temptation this fall. It would have been so much better than that Dear And Departed band that did the tour with them.

I totally see the point with the theatrical set up and that puts Therion in a difficult situation. I'm not sure what a great solution for that would be. All I know is that Yip and I are dieing to see them in Europe with a full blown setup. Amazing show! Just amazing!

I saw them headline the first night of the Dynamo festival (RIP) the year I went. They had a 8-12 piece mini orchestra on stage with them. Fantastic show. I'd love to see them in a festival setting again. I'm so glad that I was able to see them on this tour.

I'm not surprised Therion is having a rough go at it. With the band size and the lack of recognition on this side of the Atlantic, there aren't going to be too many opportunities to make money. I'll be at the Jaxx show and that probably will be packed.

Yeah, there are quite a few bands on that list for me. In fact, I can't stand most death metal on CD but live I've found I have a much bigger tolerance for it.

Black metal is another genre that I think benefits greatly from a live show and is also why I was so disappointed when I saw Dimmu Borgir - I thought their live show was really lacking compared to what I've heard on their disc.

Not Kamelot-packed. Ticket sales just aren't that high. However, it'll still be pretty good.

Yes, that was me in the front row at the Mokena show, bored out of my skull. I decided to accompany Orbweaver to the show, and I figured I'd give the band an honest chance. I thought that perhaps their live performance would impress me more than what I had heard from their last few albums. Unfortunately, my opinion remains unchanged. They put on a hell of a show for their audience, Christopher is a killer guitarist, and the tenor they had sounded great, but the overall show just didn't move me. I'm glad that Orbweaver had the time of her life, and seeing her have a good time was worth the trip for me. All I can say is that they're good at what they do, but what they do doesn't do anything for me. I found the Nightwish show the following evening to be much better.

Stay metal. Never rust.

I think the problem is that Therion shoukld be marketed as an "Experience" rather than a band. The problem with Therion is that they are packaged all wrong for the US. I know this sounds corny, but I would have them packeaged more like Trans-Siberian Orchestra, or even Blue Man Group. Yes, I know it sound ridiculous, but face facts. If you look at Therion's DVD's, you know you are not going to see your typical band. As Christofer said, they are a "show" band. Soooo, market the "show". Why not do 15 dates in Vegas or Broadway as a "Show"? It would be a lot easier for a promoter to package the "Therion Experience" rather than "Therion in Concert". You market it in a way that would get your high rollers or tourists out to see the show. They'll come. You just need the correct marketing. Hell, Cirque du Soliel did not dominate Vegas in one night, you know.

And, if there is a problem, do what TSO does: Split Therion into two productions. There are enough quality musicians out there to make it work, and Christofer could be even a bigger composer than he is now.

Peace,
Ray C.

Anyone going to the NY show know if 8 is doors or actual start time? I'm trying to work out getting down there. Problem is, Highline Ballroom is a pain to get to for me. I usually train in but Metro North goes to Grand Central not Penn Station. Amtrak sucks because their last train is around 11:30. If I miss that, I'm stuck there till 7 in the morning. Plus the rates are a rip off compared to MTA. Another option is driving down to Croton, taking amtrak in (though I'd get in around 8:30) and then taking mta out. Highline is walkable from Penn Station but I'd have to take the subway to/from Grand Central. To get there before 8, I'd have to leave work an hour early at the very least (trying not to as I'll be um.... sick on Friday..)

Highline Ballroom's web site said:
Concert starts @ 8PM
Doors open @ 6 PM
Tickets $17.00 in advance
$20.00 at door.

Hmm yeah, from GCT... nothing goes from NE to SW... your best bet would be the shuttle to times sq and then the 2 down to 14th and then hoof it over.

I assume Therion will start playing at 9.

Hope you can make it!!

As I said in the PM, ended up not going. It just wasn't going to happen as it also totally depended on me not hitting any traffic on the way down and with my luck I would have missed the train.

Yeah, I am going to miss this as well. My Fiancee was in the hospital for the last 4 days, and she just came home. I need and want to spend my night with her, rather than Therion. After all, Christofer is not going to carry my child.

I saw Therion in N.Y. last night and not being a big fan going in mostly supporting my friend who is a huge fan,I was totally blown away by them. They had the wow factor for me live.I'm sorry I missed them at ProgPower VI since my friends wanted to get something to eat so we bailed on Therion.I was happy to make that mistake up last night. One other thing, tickets were only $17.00 how in the world are they making money on this.I would have gladly paid $40 it was well worth it.

Wooohooo!!! If they can't make it back to the US, maybe they could play in MTL and we could all charter a bus to take us up there?? :D

P.S. If any of you saw a viking helment flying around near the front, that was me :p

Wow, GREAT show last night. Therion was hugely entertaining and had so much energy on stage. Decent crowd too for a Thursday night. I got a bunch of photos I'll post soon. Not sure of the set list, but they played a great variety. Talked to Snowy backstage. He was in good spirits, but still rather ambivelent about returning to the US. Still, he didn't seem to rule it out entirely.

Yeah, they seemed to all be rather impressed by the turnout in NYC. Kat's definitely eager to come back whether it's with the band or not, hehe. :)

And I dunno about merely being a goth or S&M Link, but last night, Snowy was definitely a DEMON LINK:
