with that being said i'm going with Sabbath. NEVER met a metalhead that disliked Ozzy era Sabbath. Dio era, now thats different.

I'm going to fess up, I made this topic at least partially to see the bands that earn endless praise take some heat from determined contrarians.

Black Sabbath appears to be the consensus, though.

Although I myself am not overly fond of them, Judas Priest are pretty universally respected.

My first thought was Bathory. I don't necessarily agree with Sabbath, cuz I've heard many people dis the various vocalists. Never heard anyone bash Bathory though. They seem to have pretty much universal respect among the extreme metal community.
