so it happens ive downloaded some songs by these guys recently, and i really, really like them so im thinking of buying some album stuff by them, but which one should i start with?

both albums rock quite hard, but i prefer frances the mute. i have their debut ep as well, tremulant, and it's way fucking cool although not a very good vocal performance by whosits. oh yeah and make sure to check out mid-70's era king crimson and rollins band - the end of silence so see where they got a bunch of ideas from.

and now for 30 posts saying how much they suck because somebody's cousin's uncle's hairdresser's ex-roommate heard 30 seconds of them on tv one day, didn't get it, and decided their entire existence was pointless. :)

oh yeah! :Spin:

frances the mute is weirder than de-loused. both are crazy concept albums, but de-loused you can listen to song by song and be cool, frances takes a lot more time since it's like one long 76 minute song. my friend that introduced me to them likes de-loused better, it really depends on what you want: psycho or complete mindfuck.

they only released two albums and one ep? that make things a whole lot easier, nice!

i know some of the old king crimson stuff and i dig it, and i heard the "the end of silence" album a couple of times back when it was new. thought it was quite cool back then, but i honestly cant remember any songs from it now. might be a good idea to check out that album again!

funny, i think that (with the few songs ive heard) they soyund like a mixture between radiohead and rush. am i way off here?

i think they have like 5 or 6 eps, but i don't know which ones have live tracks/singles/whatever. oh i also have the vinyl titled "frances the mute" which contains that song (not on the album) and some other live shit. haven't heard it yet though.

i could hear that, definitely. they have a ton of influences really, they sorta go all over the place oftentimes. jaykeeley said "is this supposed to sound like santana?" so there you go. :loco:

great, thanks for the the advice! and now:

i like de-loused more, they actually had a producer sitting in on that one...self-produced = wankery :loco:

actually no, see them live. i couldn't believe the sounds they could come up with, i thought it was all studio trickery when i heard it on record but ohhh no, i was wrong.

and Relayer and Farewell To Kings-era Rush (believe it or not, it only dawned on me recently the subconscious homage in using Cygnus in the title of the opening track, one of the year's best tracks) and Can and Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc...hey, these guys innovative skills are almost as exaggerated as those of Opeth!

I find "Frances the Mute" to be a simultaneously mind-blowingly brilliant and tragically flawed album. I'll admit I fast forward through about 15 or 20 minutes of the album that is just unlistenable. I'd like for them to be a bit tighter and more focused. Oh well, they're still one of the most innovative and creative acts around today.

haha, I actually heard one song from them in a store, and then decided this band was irrelevant to to my sublime tastes in music. ;)

PS - the other band members should kick out that vocalist. Yikes!

it's extra-funny seeing a guy that looks like that sing so gratingly and (dare I say) girlishly? when I heard the single off "frances the mute" on the radio i thought it was actually a chick for a while, til it clicked that "oh wait, this is the mars volta"

Their first album (not EP) rules. I just hate the fact that they are so big now. I know I shouldn't allow people to ruin music for me, but it's impossible considering they tour with douchebags like Tool.
