The most beautiful video I've ever seen.

Thanks for sharing that....it was very nice. I like the cinematography and the landscape (is that Iceland) is just breathtaking....

It's very (for me) quistessentially Sigur Ros...at least what I get from this video or when I listen to them...they evoke feelings of nostalgia...that innocence/beauty we all had/have in ourselves which is more prominent in childhood...the only other video of theirs I've seen also featured children....I think it was from ().

..is that on purpose I wonder?

I haven't really kept up with their stuff for the past couple of years...Mum replaced them as favorite Icelandic band....now THAT is an amazing band...
 
múm is another favorite of mine.

I think this video is really interesting in many senses, one of those being that that you've already mentioned. Innocence/Beauty.
Have you seen the Hoppipolla video? It's really interesting also, it's about some old people acting like children, again.. back to the innocence, but this time with a nice twist.

Back to this video, what makes me feel weird is all the beauty featured throughout the video, just to have a tragic ending (suprise). it leaves me with this weird mixture of nice/sad feelings.
 
so Ive been seeing these guys mentioned a bit around here lately and Im pretty sure I saw their new album in the shops too..... What are they like? (I can't watch the vid coz Im at work)
 
^wow, that's a hard question...

I can't even compare them to any other band because these guys have a very distinctive sound that sets them apart from the rest.

It's calmed down, mellodic, sad (yet happy) music... with some nice strings arrangements. The lyrics are sung in Icelandic and Hopelandic (this language doesn't even exist, it was made up by Jonsi, the singer), but even when you have no idea what he's trying to say, you'll get as much feeling as if you were hearing real moving lyrics.

My suggestion: quit your job, tell your boss to fuck off and shove the work up his ass, go to the nearest record store and buy Agaetis Byrjus, ( ) and Takk NOW!!! you won't regret it. :)
 
what? they're pretty consistently musical

WTF?! NO!, well.. you're entitled to your opinion, but I can't understand where you're coming from with that statement. True, their songs don't have a standard structure they have tons of interludes, but all these parts are as good as the rest.
 
^they definitely have their own style, which hasnt changed that much, but...

Von- More Eclectic
Agaetis Byrjun- More uplifting with amazing climaxes
( )- obviously much more minimalistic than the previous 2
Takk- Sometimes more rock-oriented

So there's clearly some evolution and nice surprises with each release.

I agree with NFU here, if you have worked hard to reach your own personal "sound", there's no need to drastically change it.

IMO when an artist/band reaches that level of having their "sound" it is completely respectable if they choose to play around that same style they've crafted with nice twists here and there.
 
yes they have their own style, im just saying that theres almost no progression from album to album. back when takk was released, i remember thinking how stale the material sounded- not because of poor songwriting but a feeling that i've heard it all before. imo

Yes, they can be sparse at times....and depending on your taste and the artist, that can be a bit elusive for some listeners...

You should maybe check out Mum...similar to Sigur Ros in that they are also from what I would call that same school of Icelandic artists. But I find their music more lush and multilayered than SR. All of the members play multiple instruments (you have your standard 4 piece band...then add violin, accordion, trumpet harmonica and keyboards plus programmed beats) and they manage to pull it off wonderfully live!

Sigur Ros in a live setting was...not bad...and it was even at a really nice theatre...but for me, their music is better listening to at home.

(to stay on somewhat on topic) I just watched a couple of Mum's videos and I do have to say that SR takes the cake with that...translating their music visually...

Well, I'm sorry but I think you're a bit nitpicking...
Of course they are recognizably Sigur Ros...so you hear them and you recognize it...but I don't think that their material is in anyway stale...
