There has been a total of eight members in the history of Dark Tranquillity by now, and four of them have been along from the very beginning. I think it is time to find out, whose work is held the most important by the members of this board. Please, consider their whole "careers", not just their importance for the band right now - that's why I left for example Martin Brändström outside this poll, for although he means a lot to the band right now, his influence can be heard on only one album.

Niklas "Hedon" Sundin - For long Niklas was "the man behind DT" being the main song-writer and lyricist, but his musical contribution for the band has gradually lessened. In his prime, he has participated in creating of A Bolt of Blazing Gold, Of Chaos and Eternal Night, Punish My Heaven, Hedon and UnDo Control, among many, many others. Interestingly enough, he has never composed a song all by himself. Niklas didn't contribute on the band's latest album, Haven. Still, he did the cover-art for the latest two albums and his work as the webmaster is surely known for us all.

Mikael Stanne - Where on Skydancer he was "just" the second-guitarist and backing-vocalist, from then on Mikael has been the undeniable front-man of the band. His vocal performance is a key-factor in the "DT-sound" and his lyrical contribution has been wide, from songs like Through Ebony Archways and ...Of Melancholy Burning to Insanity's Crescendo, Nether Novas and Haven, etc. He also composed the argued Day to End on Projector.

Martin Henriksson - Martin was never just the bassist of Dark Tranquillity; he always did a big part of the song-writing and his abilities on guitar were long proved before Haven in the acoustic parts on the early albums. He is the only member, who has composed something to each full-length DT-album - and not just "filler" songs! Tunes like A Bolt of Blazing Gold, Lethe, Hedon, Sun Fired Blanks and Rundown are parts of his work, alongside with many other songs.

Anders Jivarp - For years Anders went quite unnoticed as just "the guy playing the drums", and only now that his work on Projector and especially on Haven has been heard, he has claimed some fame as a composer. In truth, however, he participated in a lesser scale on several earlier songs, like Crimson Winds, Shadow Duet, Punish My Heaven and The Dividing Line. As was proved lately, a "drummer" could be replaced from any band - Anders is a lot more than just a drummer.

In addition to these four guys, Fredrik Johansson must be mentioned. He was a very influential person for the band's sound during the years when he was in the band - being the main writer of Punish My Heaven, for example. However, as his main work is concentrated on just two albums, The Gallery and The Mind's I (plus a couple of songs on Projector), I did not include him in this poll.

Now, let's hear everyone's comments, right!

sorry I won't vote, wouldn't be fair, couldn't be partial...
and I think is nice to chose between songs and albums, but not between the musicweavers!
but it's just an opinion!

I totally agree. Without any of the guys it wouldnt be possible to have made what they made. Every member is a piece and to say one was more important would be nothing but lieing because they are all amazing at what they do.

Yes, I can see your points. I just thought that this poll should not be taken so seriously - after all, we are only discussing opinions here. The "importance" of anything is always very subjective and thus we should only voice our opinion this matter, not judge "who is more important than any other". I hope you can see the difference. If you can't decide your own opinion, then you can pass this poll, but let the others have the fun of choosing their favorites.

I myself voted for Henriksson, on the basis that his personal influence can be heard in so many DT-songs (almost all songs on Skydancer, over half of the songs on The Gallery, many songs on The Mind's I and again over half of the songs on Projector and Haven). Sundin was very close behind, but eventually it was Haven that gave the decicive "victory" for Henriksson. Although Stanne is probably the most "irreplacable" member of the band right now (who could take his place if he left?), I still think his small role in the actual song-writing (apart from the lyrics) makes him less important than the other guys.

And I agree on the fact that they are all important.

truly, if anybody left i wouldn't know who could ever take his place. i voted (for niklas, quite naturally) on a completely personal preference basis: he's the only dt member i know directly (i just said hi once to henriksson and exchanged a couple of words total with mikael) and i admire what he does and how he does it. that's all.

i really think they're all irreplaceable (the four you mentioned on the poll, at least), but it's true that everyone on this forum might just express an opinion based on sympathy or similar tastes. it's an ok question, no one is messing with the line up. ;)

Agreed. But I thought the same about Johansson, before he left. And guess what - it wasn't TOO big a loss for the band, after all. Henriksson can play the guitar and Nicklasson the bass and the sound is as good as ever! Of course I miss that extra-something that Johansson's contribution gave to the band, but the new guys are doing it so well that I won't complain.

I hope we won't lose any other DT-members. But if we do, I'm somehow confident that there will be "new blood" somewhere to step in to the band.

I won't vote too and one resons why is because the chemestry between the band members is very important. Maybe when you withdraw Jivarp, the band wouldn't write songs as good as they did. We can't know, so I won't say anything.

But I understand your point Vilain...

Yep, they are definitely all essential to DT, but I think I'd have to say Sundin is my favorite. I love all of his work. I like Haven quite a bit, but from the first time I heard it I knew there was something big missing that I really wanted to hear. Now I know what it is! Sundin's fantastic musicianship!

It is extremely hard to decide. Each has his own impact, nad there would be different impacts if each left the band. I personally think it can effect the band slightly less if a vocalist leaves. although his voice is not part of the band's sound anymore, the new vocalist will write his own lyrics and add those on top of the insturments. Often if an insturmentalist leaves a band, the balance is changed and others will not fit the style of the rest of the band members.

I am equally grateful to each member, especially Mikael Stanne. Martin Henriksson, Nicklas Sundin and Fredrik Jonasson created the melodies that I will always treasure in my heart, and Anders Jivarp as a drummer is like a heart of the band, for rythm is particularly important in any of DT's creations.
