Been seeing 'Mount Rushmore' discussions a lot on social media lately so I thought we should do it too.

There's also a common misconception about what it means. It's not "most popular" or "your favourite" but instead it's about which 4 things are the most foundational to the subject.

For example if I were to do a personal Mount Rushmore of death metal albums it would look like this:
dmrushmore.png
Scream Bloody Gore and Eaten Back to Life were the first death metal CD's I ever bought, Severed Survival was my first death metal LP, and the shitty 1998 reissue of Season of the Dead was the first time I bought something without any recommendations and that I'd never heard of. They were big influences on me going forward into the genre and are fundamentally important to my taste in death metal.

The 'Mount Rushmore' game can be about anything though, comedy movies, European power metal, sitcoms, death doom metal bands, it can pertain to your personal taste (like my death metal one) or a more objective statement about something (eg death metal's 4 most foundational albums)---you decide, and just post it in here.

An attempt at a recipe for brewing your own Mount Rushmore of Bloopy movie taste:

Name your definitive movie for each of the 4 categories below. With the requirement that the most dominant genre of each film is not a comedy genre. That's very subjective: comedy can still be primary if you think a movie's slightly less comedic and slightly more something else. Eg. a 'crime comedy' which is a bit more uh, crime-y.
  • campy violence/gore
  • black comedy
  • whimsy
  • absurdist/surrealist comedy

For me it's Hannibal, Frenzy, The Spanish Prisoner and... Eraserhead, I suppose.

The last category seemed tricky to come up with something for, but there's plenty of amusement in Eraserhead (beyond what I suppose is black comedy about fetal freakiness and death, eg. the oozing chicken carcass or the severed head dream). There's Henry's hair/appearance, the way his neighbour flirts with him while he's trying to conceal the baby, Paul being yelled at at the pencil factory, everything else about the dinner scene etc. A bit of which is whimsical... I guess I just spelled out that gore, black comedy, whimsy and the absurd/surreal all overlap. :)

aaaaaaaah! (2015)
when pigs fly (1993)
brand upon the brain! (2006)

i'll be honest, these aren't my 'definitive' movies at all but just ones i recommend for each category that i expect you won't have seen.
