I'd say ask Ulysse.

IMO, Friden might have a unique voice, but it's a boring one. If I dare start yet another polemic, I'd say that vocal-wise, the best IF record is Lunar Strain.

Boring??? Um, like yawning while singing?

I dunno what tricks he did on Come Clarity, but trying to simply replicate his singing (TJR kinda vox were quite easy for me back in the day) - it's killing me in 0.1 sec (Crawl Through Knives in particular)

Exactly what i've been saying. It's not '93. Friden is even worse now. If someone (ie you and blackash) likes Friden so much, they should go listening to In Flames and stop wishing this horrible plague upon DT.
And one more thing.. unique isn't always a good thing. ;).

Yeah, right...

His voice on Skydancer is amazing. At least don't say it in front of Niklas :p he's a really good friend of Dark Tranquillity. I mean A Bolt of Blazing Gold and Crimson Winds are just awesome - because of Anders' vocals.
Oh, but why, i didn't say it was Niklas' voice that sucks. :p

Don't get me wrong, i never said i don't like Skydancer. In fact, i love it very much. I just think that one of its weak points is Friden's vocals on it, and i hold the conviction that it would have been slightly better had Mikael delivered the goods. He did do an excellent job in Through Ebony Archways and Shadow Duet after all, didn't he?

And don't get me wrong on this either, but what does it have to do with this that Anders is friends with DT?
I didn't say anything bad about him as a person, i don't know the guy and i couldn't care less. If i ever meet him i might get an opinion on this, but until then..

Boring??? Um, like yawning while singing?
No, boring like uninspired, flat and unable to make me drop my jaw in enthusiasm or excitement.
Oh, and it sounds like someone attacking a plate of hot boiled potatoes. :)

(i love it when you get mad like that :D)

edit: Special thanks to Caotico for the correction. I, too, always thought it was the part Rampy posted.

Nah, I lose my cool in real life these days :D

Some say same things about Mikael's work, so it's becoming more of a personal taste issue (yep, witnessed that and got mad that time).

I'd put Stanne, Friden and Strid (in that order, #1 and on) if I needed to name 3 best vocalists in SMDM... and may be overall "of all time", cuz it's not about just growling something out, but bringing more with it, and these gentlemen happen to deliver the top shtuff many years in a row.

I had this funny pic of them somewhere...

I'd also get mad if i heard something like that.

And of course it's a matter of personal taste.
Friden's not that bad when you hear some of the shit that crawls out there trying to reach your brain.. But Stanne will always be #1 in my heart, i'm in love with his voice ever since i listened to Auctioned ( <-- typical girl case).

And post that picture up. :heh:

Actually, that's Mikael through a set of distortion effects. Anders' voice is just the "Hedon, hedon, hedon" chant in the background at some point.

Ah crap, for once I thought I figured something out right. Thanks for the clarification though. Nothing like the true words of an inside man to enlighten our questioning, and sometimes questionable, minds.

edit: As of great singers, Stanne is definitely out there with other living legends like Valfar (well he's not living but still, a legend) and Nemtheanga. I could name others but these three guys are IMO the ones that really live the songs they sing, and they deliver every time with a lot of passion and emotion (note that emotion can mean rage or anger sometimes, not just despair and melancholy).

If I must: the only memorable performance from Friden was on the album Whoracle. Apart from that one, he's not that special.

You must mean The Jester Race. :p Anyway, at least Friden changes his voice in each album and enhances himself every time. He had a different voice in each album (I don't mean R2R, STYE, and CC). Stanne just sounds about the same in each album, I admit he's good, he's ofcourse better than Friden now (no doubt). But I liked Friden's old vocals more than Stanne's old ones. But now, it's no question; Stanne.

I have to disagree. Maybe Friden "changes" his voice from one album to another but I doubt he's enhancing anything...

Also, I do admit that Stanne voice isn't that changing (I don't know why it should be seen as a negative point but meh). Still if you listen to him on Damage Done and then Character, you'll see a pretty big difference in his voice.

I can't see much difference really... On ''The New Build'' and some other songs, I liked some ''new'' stuff he did with his vocals (starting deep growl, then high pitch, then low pitch, etc) although it's not that different. I know change isn't always good but one has to change a bit sometime, it's called evolution of bands, every band changes a bit - with everything.

Yeah, well...I guess it'll be next week instead. The news update has to be synched with C.M.'s press release, and they probably want to wait until the release dates and touring plans are 100% confirmed. So - sorry for this & thanks for your patience!

Good to know - I won't have to log on to dt.com every second I'm around a connected PC this weekend (I'll be on a road most of time) now :heh:

At this point, i guess on the next album you could have a song named "Patience is the key" !

Sorry it s not one of my qualities, just ignore me :)

No prob, Niklas. I'm sure a little more waiting won't kill most of us.

And on an aside, related to funny song titles, my recent experiences with game instability after the WoW expansion release have made me think "World Server is Down" would be an awesome DT song.
