4 (2008)A francia The Oath szerintem idehaza senkinek se jelent semmit, s valójában nem is nagyon fog a jövőben sem. Lyonban alakultak 99-ben, 2000-ben s két évvel rá kibocsátottak egy-egy demót, majd nagy szünet után tavaly megjelent az első nagylemezük The End Of Times címmel - s némileg ötletesebb borítóval, mint az idei 4... a külsőségek olyanok, mint ha Boris Vallejo amazonjait valaki fotómanipuláció oltárán feláldozva elvacakolt volna fél órát. A logó is erősen klisé, pontosabban egy betű font, ennél sokkal ötletesebb dolgokkal is előrukkolhattak volna a francia srácok, mikor maga a zene, ha nem is feszített tempóban, de azért ötlet gazdag.
Pontosan 45 perc vár ránk, a dallamok és őrlős témák közepette, műfajilag a heavy-power black metal lenne a legtalálóbb, de nem az a Bewitched féle (hiszen itt a rocknroll-nak nyomát se vélhetjük felfedezni), inkább közelít egy picit néhol a Children of Bodom-hoz, amire a billentyű részletek is rásegítenek. Olyan csapatok hatásai említhetőek még meg, mint a Nagflar vagy a korai Embracing. Néhol egész thrash-es lesz, és penge éles riffekkel szabdalják fel a hallgatót, de az alapvető koncepció a dallamos darálás kásás gitárokkal és szélsebes dobokkal, melyre hörgés és károgás feszül rá (van ahol dallamos éneket is kapunk pl. A Question of Faith-ben) szép-csilingelő és magasztos szintetizátor felhőkkel. Nincs hiány a virtuóz szólókban, s ahol középtempós ott energikus és pattogó poweres thrash dolgok kerekednek ki.
Valójában nagyon is jó az, amit játszanak, s talán még valamennyire hiánypótló is, hiszen a felsorolt hordák egy része vagy már nem létezik, vagy átalakult, s ilyen téren a francia The Oath azt hiszem remek alternatívát nyújt. Mondanom se kell, hogy a zenészek vérprofik, a billentyűk szinte progresszív és jazz szerű hatásokat sorakoztatnak fel, illetve van, ahol szinte már metalcore szerűvé lesznek de ez a melodikus death metal reinkarnációnak tudható be, s nem a divatnak. Minden a helyére kerül csakhamar, s a zenei koncepció is megtervezett és komplex képet fest róluk, valahogy mégis nem tudom, de képtelen vagyok teljeségében dűlőre jutni velük, talán több középtempó kellett volna, vagy fogalmam sincs, de nagyon paradoxon korong lett.
Lehet a befogadás csak nekem ennyire nehézkes, hiszen az évek alatt telítődtem a hasonló atmoszférákkal dolgozó csapatok jobb-rosszabb lemezivel, s talán az is zavar, hogy néhol a korai Cradle of Filth és a Dimmu Borgir neve merül fel. Persze minden keveredik a dallamos heavy metal megoldásokkal, az energikus power őrlésekkel, a néhol erősen thrash orientált riff hegyekkel, és a csépelő dobokkal, melyekért Tyrael, aki hajdanán a Destinity-ben is jól teljesített, itt sem vallott szégyent. Aki vágyik a svéd dallamos melódiák és a szélsőséges norvég darázsfészek egyéjszakás randevújának, felemás gyermekére, az nyugodtan próbálkozzék a lyoni srácok klasszikus zenei megoldásoktól sem idegenkedő új szerzeményével, mely október 2.-tól lesz elérhető a boltok polcain.

Code666, 2008 The Oath uit Frankrijk vervoegde eerder de Code666 gelederen. Code666 heb ik altijd een prima label gevonden, met bands als Negura Bunget en zoals de Nederlanders onder jullie wel weten, Control Human Delete. Na het faillissement van het waardering wekkende Rage Of Achilles-label hebben ook veel ontlabelde releases hun weg gevonden via Code666. The Oath is nu ook van de partij en brengt met hun 4 een album uit dat het middel houdt tussen Dimmu Borgir, Emperor en At The Gates, volgens het rode promosheet. Verbaas ons.
The Oath brengt melodische black metal met wat invloeden uit Scandinavische thrash/death. Helaas... niet van de sterkste soort. De referenties die ze maken zijn niet echt relevant, behalve de composities en de trucs van de kermis die je herkent van Dimmu Borgir. Wel relevant is Cradle of Filth, zelfs in de thrash/death invloeden die je onder andere in hun Thornography terug vindt. The Oath voegt hier en daar wat accenten toe, een stukje cleane zang, keyboardlijnen uit een thrillende B-films en speelse gitaareffecten. Het tempo ligt gemiddeld vrij hoog, mede door de behoorlijk strakke drummer die soms zijn klasse laat horen, maar zich meestal braafjes in up-tempo houding zet. Het beste nummer op de plaat is The Unborn, en dan denk ik wel even met vragend gezicht of ze zich bij The Oath ergens hebben laten inspireren door het machtige Night Of The Unborn op het album Don't Break the Oath van Mercyful fate.
Een vrij matig album dus, die geen indruk nalaat. Van de originaliteit moeten ze het ook niet hebben. Beetje een misser van Code666 vind ik, die met een groep als Eternal Deformity beter uit de hoek kwam eerder dit jaar, ongeveer in hetzelfde genre. Volgende keer beter.

Met zo'n omschrijving moet een band wel van heel goede huize komen om niet te falen. En helaas, The Oath komt niet in de buurt van de omschrijving die het label voor hen gekozen heeft. Wat er op '4' valt te beluisteren is al vaker gedaan en, helaas, beter. Door Zyklon bijvoorbeeld.
Het is echt spijtig, want het is zeer merkbaar dat The Oath zijn best heeft gedaan om een spetterend album neer te zetten waar veel werk in zit. Het artwork bijvoorbeeld, is meer dan in orde, evenals de productie. Maar de riffs pakken gewoon niet zo. De keyboards, jammergenoeg, passen niet helemaal bij de muziek en zijn simpelweg niet zo interessant en eerder irritant. Uiteindelijk is '4' niet geheel onbeduidend en deze band heeft zeker compositorische en speeltechnische vaardigheden, maar The Oath moet echt een eigen weg zien te vinden en daarnaast het materiaal op een hoger niveau tillen voordat deze band echt een plaat kan maken die ergens boven uitsteekt.

Franske The Oath har en selvfinansiert utgivelse fra 2006 på samvittigheten før de nå slipper oppfølgeren gjennom det italienske kultselskapet Code 666. Bandets musikk hører stilmessig hjemme i grenseland mellom symfonisk black metal og death metal. Selskapet beskriver musikken som en hybrid av Dimmu Borgir, Emperor og At The Gates og det er faktisk ikke en helt dum beskrivelse. Låtmaterialet holder jevnt over meget høy standard med en nærmest perfekt balanse mellom brutalitet, atmosfære og melodi. Produksjonen er fyldig og krystallklar og det er heller ikke mye å utsette på den tekniske utførelsen. Hvor originalt dette er kan selvfølgelig diskuteres, men så lenge oppskriften funker bryr jeg meg fint lite som slike ting. Skiva anbefales varmt til fans av atmosfærisk ekstremmetal generelt. NB! Skiva slippes først 2. oktober.

"The oath sapprête à gravir une nouvelle marche. Le 2 octobre va sortir « 4 », leur nouvel album, 4 comme leur 4ème production (2 démos, 2 albums). Après un « The end of times » au charme certain, on était en droit de se demander si The oath pouvait encore développer leur art. Et par la même sil était à la hauteur pour se mesurer à la scène mondiale. Du point de vue accroche, la pochette est dune envergure bien supérieure à celle du premier album. Mais ce qui importe est évidemment la musique. Le groupe a atteint un son très mature, clair et bien défini tout en étant puissant, il fait très pro. Seul les chants ressortent assez mal car un peu brouillons. Timbre black et death metal pour une sombre sensation courant sur des rythmiques black voire dark metal plutôt bien vues. Et cest peut-être à la teinte inquiétante dun clavier aux humeurs angoissantes et old school que The oath doit une bonne partie de son charisme. En effet, le jeu de cordes est plutôt tranchant et bien rythmé (surtout pour du black metal) mais reste relativement convenu. Par contre lapparition anecdotique dun chant clair fait que le 4ème titre est au-dessus des autres, en effet grâce à ce rajout il savère plus personnel et touchant. Gageons alors que ces lyonnais ont encore quelques cartes dans leurs manches pour, dans le futur, nous étonner à nouveau.
Malgré quelques imperfections, le cap international est bel et bien franchit. Cependant, il nest pas certain que cela suffira à marquer durablement les mémoires. « 4 » est réussit et mérite lattention.

Davvero sorprendenti questi ragazzi, un vero piacere l'ascolto di questo disco. The Oath, gruppo che si destreggia con maestria in quel tipo di black metal sorretto da cupe melodie di tastiere e fraseggi death metal, che spesso si sentono oggi nei gruppi europei e che fa capolino ai maestri Emperor, passando per i più moderni Dimmu Borgir e Behemoth. Nel nostro caso però la band punta di più sul fattore aggressività, accentuando le accelerate e dando alle tastiere il giusto spazio, inserendole dove necessita, per ottenere una caratterizzazione della traccia maggiore o per renderla più evocativa. Ottima dunque la complessiva esecuzione dei brani, che vede una sezione ritmica, fragorosa e variegata in grado di eseguire coinvolgenti mid-tempo e reggere tempi velocissimi, da tachicardia. Un lavoro di composizione arioso ma particolarmente incisivo, che utilizza tecniche anche leziose, ma mai fini a se stesse, in grado di arginare la furia brutale della componente death metal. Le impennate di A Question Of Faith non sono troppo distanti dai Dimmu Borgir a conti fatti, ma brillano di luce propria e si può azzardare il confronto solo perché ci troviamo pur sempre all'interno dello stesso genere. The Unborn, spezza la tensione adagiandosi su tappeti morbidi di tastiere e arpeggi, ma poi parte devastante accompagnata da raffinate fughe di piano. Molto coinvolgente Dead Inside che riallaccia i rapporti con un certo tipo di death metal scandinavo della fine degli anni '90. Così anche la finale Godless Existence, forse la più brutale tra tutte, che richiama i fasti degli Emperor d'annata.
Tre quarti d'ora di grande impatto sonoro ed armonico che nulla ha da invidiare a band come Drautran oppure Farsot che, ad oggi, sono davvero ottime direzioni per il black metal più ricercato e che ci mostra la Francia come terra fertile per produzioni estreme. La registrazione, per altro molto efficace, è però stata effettuata in Germania, dal produttore dei Crematory, che ha svolto un buon lavoro, riuscendo a rendere rilevante la poetica vena tastieristica del gruppo senza sacrificare l'impeto violento e oscuro. Sicuramente un lavoro competitivo che sarà in grado di interessare un buon numero di ascoltatori anche di diversa estrazione.

"THE OATH aus Lyon gründeten sich 1999, also just, als Emperors IX Equilibrium veröffentlicht wurde. Und genauso müsst ihr euch das neue Album vorstellen - und dazu eine geballte Ladung At The Gates. Ja, richtig gelesen: Treffender kann man dieses Album nicht beschreiben. Schon der Opener ´This Day´ zeigt, wo der Hammer hängt. Viel Keyboardarbeit à la Emperor, die Vocals schwanken zwischen hallendem Kreischen und tiefen Growls, wie man sie von Misery Index kennt, nur weniger aggressiv im Hintergrund eingesetzt. Aber wie kann das alles zusammenpassen? Die Franzosen haben einfach das richtige Händchen für eine bislang nie gehörte düstere Melange und finden Bindeglieder zwischen den Stilen in Form von schweren Todesriffs, Akustik-Einlagen und aggressiven Blastbeats. Der Sound ist zwar modern, und bei den teilweise sehr herrisch klimpernden Keyboards dürften sich die Geister scheiden - aber hörenswert ist die Scheibe allemal."

"Deze Fransozen spelen melodieuze black metal in de stijl van Old Mans Child en Dimmu Borgir. Hier en daar hoor ik ook wel wat invloeden van een semi-death metalband als Amon Amarth. De overgangen klinken hier en daar wel eens een beetje onlogisch, maar dat mag de pret niet drukken. Met het eerste nummer begint deze cd voortvarend (al zit er een erg herkenbaar nummer in verwerkt), helaas zakt het niveau daarna in naar een middelmatig niveau. Het grote probleem is dat de nummers onderling nogal inwisselbaar zijn. Dit wordt vo**** in de hand gewerkt doordat steeds dezelfde songstructuren (op hoge snelheid) en zanglijnen terugkomen. Dit zou niet hoeven als je weet dat deze band uit nogal wat vaatjes tapt. De basis is opgebouwd rond melodieuze en furieuze black metal, wat death metal en daarbij nog wat power metalinvloeden. Ook is de synthesizer over de gehele linie aanwezig, als een volwaardig instrument (en daar moet je van houden). Verder domineren de zangers (2 stuks en hier en daar nog wat cleane zang) op deze plaat nogal door hun vrijwel constante aanwezigheid. Kortom, ingrediënten genoeg, voor een goede basis zou je zeggen. Toch kunnen ze mijn aandacht niet vasthouden. Her en der duikt een aardig stukje muziek op maar het grote deel van deze nogal drukke plaat raast vrij eenzijdig voorbij. Voor de fans van totaal dichtgesmeerde, melodieuze goed geproduceerde commerciële blackmetal is dit misschien nog een leuke aanvulling voor de collectie. Op basis van het eerste nummer durf ik wel te stellen dat de potentie er is maar dat zal moeten blijken op een volgende release."

"Javais chroniqué le premier album du groupe The Oath, The End Of Times sorti en 2006 que javais apprécié, le groupe ayant changé de line up depuis, tout au moins de chanteur et de guitariste. Le style de ce second album « 4 » est toujours du black/death métal avec un côté symphonique apporté par les claviers. Ce qui sétait révélé excellent dans le premier album, ne fait que saffirmer dans le second : le groupe fait toujours un excellent travail au niveau des compositions, notamment au niveau des mélodies et des changements de rythmiques. Le chant est bien en place, un mélange de death/black métal, avec un côté agressif très présent, et oh ! Surprise un peu de chant clair dans « A Question Of Faith » que je trouve superbe !!! Superbe voix claire ! Il est même dommage que le groupe nen mette pas un peu plus, cela apporte un réel plus au morceau. Les claviers donnent de superbes mélodies ainsi que de belles nappes mélodiques. Les riffs sont bien tranchants, lourds et puissants mais quelquefois un peu trop classiques. The Oath, avec cet album a pris de la maturité au niveau du travail de ses compositions, plus riches encore. Cest un album qui mérite une attention et une écoute certaine. Il laisse toujours présager du bon pour les années à venir pour le groupe."

Im Jahre 2000 und 2002 wurden Demos herausgebracht und im Jahre 2006 gab es das selbst prodzierte Debutalbum namens "The end of times". Das Label Code666 wurde auf sie aufmerksam, nahm sie unter Vertrag und mit Hilfe der deutschen Promotionfirma "Gordeon Music Promotion" ist nun das zweite Album veröffentlicht. "4" bietet uns nebem einem Intro 9 Darbietungen französischer Kunst. Nachdem ich den ersten Schock verdaut hatte, der aufgrund der Keyboardklänge zum Vorschein kam, konnte ich mich recht gut mit den Songs anfreunden. "The Oath" versuchen ihre Einflüsse, die aus den Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Black Metal und Heavy Metal Bereichen stammen, unter einen Hut zu bekommen und das gelingt ihnen überwiegend gut. Herausgekommen ist ein recht zügiges, blackendes Death Metal Album. Wie gesagt, die Keyboardklänge nerven mich schon, zumal sie allgegendwärtig sind, aber dafür hat die Band es echt drauf, vernünftige Melodien zu erzeugen. Nicht schlecht, Freunde der Nacht. Die fünf Franzosen verstehehn es, aggressiv, melodisch, groovig und heavy vorzugehen. Dabei hilft ihnen sicherlich die geile Produktion von Kristian Kohlmannslehner. In der Beschreibung siehte man die Band als eine Mischung aus Dimmu Borgir, At the Gates und Emperor. Kann man so sehen. Sicherlich noch nicht alles hundertprozentig, aber durchaus einige klasse Stücke dabei!"

If you like acts like: At The Gates , Emperor , Dimmu Borgir, etc. Than The Oath is a band you've got to hear for sure!!! This French quintet, consisting of D444 vocals/guitar , Drako guitars, Carcharoth bass , Peterpal keyboards/clean vocals and Tyrael drums, delivers with ''4'' a blasting album containing 10 tracks of blackened Death Metal.
At the first listening I found it hard to belief that these guys are French because the overall sound made me instantly think 'Hey - these guys must be Scandinavian' but hell no they are French alright! The Oath's home base is set in Lyon where they started during the year 1999 and their music is set at the border of Black, Death, Thrash and Heavy Metal. During the years they build up quit a name in the extreme Metal scene and shared the stage with bands such as Enslaved, Keep Of Kalessin, Negura Bunget, Misanthrope, Antaeus and many others...
Now that is said let's talk about their new album ''4''! The album starts with a dark spooky intro which cross over in the second track 'This Day' and immediately the tone is set with ear splitting riffs ,groovy rhythms, blast beats, massive grunts & screams! The third track 'Orgasm' shows the versatility of this band with a nice balanced melodic midsection and a nice guitar solo. 'A Question Of Faith' even reveals some clean vocals and in my opinion they should use this feature a bit more cause it brings a nice twist to their music, again this proves that these French Metalheads are top-notch!
It has to be said that listening to this album made my head bang spontaneously so this is freaking good stuff! The rollercoaster of Metal continues with 'Unholy Blood' and fast riffs in combination of blast beats stands central in this track, very nice indeed! 'The Unborn' sets of with a fine piece of acoustic guitars and drums and makes you think there's a place to catch you're breath but after 41 sec all hell breaks loose and again The Oath kicks you right in the face with fucking mental metal!
The sound on this album is really excellent, every instrument used is well balanced and the production is really massive, hell yeah!!! The album continues with 'Lifeless Desire', 'Dead Inside', 'War' and 'Godless Existence' and keeps representing The Oath's versatile style witch is quit difficult to label but none of the less very interesting and fucking great as well!!!
In my opinion hearing is believing and The Oath is a band you most definitely have to hear and when you do I'm sure you're gonna love it and buy the album for sure! ''4'' by The Oath will be released early October 2008 through the Italian Kult record label Code666 so don't be a prick and make a run to the record store and get this amazing album!!!

Whilst a burgeoning extreme underground has bubbled up of late, it is Gojira who have been the first to really put French metal on the map, and expect to hear much more from them soon with the release of "The Way Of All Flesh". But in the mean time savour the blackened death metal (or should it be deathed-up black metal?) attack from The Oath, upon us with "4", their second full-length opus since a formation back in 1999. French they do not sound, instead straddling the borders of Norwegian BM, American Thrash and a touch of Polish DM just for that cosmopolitan feel which that frog-eating beret-wearing nation (I'm sorry, I couldn't help it) seems to value in themselves. There is much to be said for bands and albums that don't know which style to settle in; for some it is an earned freedom from the shackles of artistic confinement, in others the feel is more of indecisiveness in not knowing what is best for them. The Oath fall somewhere in between these two parallels, neither sounding restricted to the demanding requirements of some extreme metal scenes but not always appearing to be totally content with the direction they have chosen for themselves. Note the orchestral-sounding synth regimented by Emperor and Children of Bodom, found to be leading the charge for much of "4", sometimes purposeful and beneficial ("Dead Inside"), at others insultory and depreciative of other efforts on the album ("Unholy Blood"). The vocals throughout tend to be harsh BM shrieks, think Gorgoroth or Dimmu Borgir, with forays into DM grunts (successful) and clean vocals (unsuccessful, as evidenced in "A Question Of Faith"), however it is the instinctive lead riffwork of guitarists Drako and D444 which is required to keep The Oath's collective head above water under a sea of synth scene-setting. More than being a piece however to counteract negative aspects, the riffwork in the likes of "Godless Existence" draws comparisons to Norwegian black/folk band Windir and by such a comparison alone garners extra appreciation towards "4" from this writer through a shared understanding of the benefits of intelligent guitar and keyboard interplay. The Oath have made the noticeable effort to mix up songs, structures and styles on "4" to avoid sinking into the mass of similarly positioned bands from all around the world and it is this effort that generates much of the mark awarded to them. As you might expect for any band this side of 'perfection', it doesn't always work but credit goes out to The Oath for attempting the Dimmu Borgir synth to such an intensity, allowing themselves to stand or fall by the performance of their chosen lead instrument. For those who like their Metal aggressive and petulant yet sprinkled with synth fairy dust The Oath might well be a band for you."

The five of them hail from Lyon, have been around since 1999 and previously had one self released album which met with critical acclaim but was pretty much unknown outside their native France.
The press release asks me to consider the best parts of Dimmu Borgir, At the Gates and Emperor and describes the overall sound as blackened death metal and Very hard to label.
Well, I love a challenge, so heres a label: absolutely brilliant world-class metal in a symphonic black style, with underlying elements of thrash. And lets not forget to mention that this is really, really catchy. I found myself with A Question of Faith running through my head on numerous occasions since I started playing this CD its one of those tracks that has everything going for it. Its catchy, well-written, has outstanding harmonies between distorted and clean vocals, all provided by D444 (Im sure thats the name of an electronics component that I used to buy years ago ), rippling keyboards very much in the style of Dimmu everything is just what you could wish for. The lyrical themes would seem to tend towards the black metal side of things (Im basing this judgement on track titles such as Unholy Blood and Godless Existence as obviously its a touch difficult to actually distinguish individual words in a distorted vocal) but the catchiness of it all is what really makes this album stand out. Each track is well-written and each track could stand quite well on its own merits. Theres no endless repetition here, no opportunity to get bored, The Oath are playing flat-out from the start and dont know how to let up. The passion that these guys have for their music shines out from every note of this black-tinged masterpiece.
If Live4Metal gave marks for albums, I suspect that 4 would have to get a perfect 10. But since we dont do that, I shall settle for informing you that this is a truly brilliant release.

Code666 julkaisemat levyt ovat viime vuosina aiheuttaneet lähinnä revenneitä leukaperiä ja kummastunutta kiinnostusta, yleensä musiikillisen kieroon kasvaneisuutensa vuoksi. Ranskalainen The Oath tekee kuitenkin poikkeuksen jatkumoon, sillä yhtyeen moderni dark/black metal ei erikoisuuksilla leveile ja täten siihen tulee suhtauduttua maanläheisen juurevasti. Yhtye ei edes koeta luoda ympärilleen mystisyyden pehmentävää auraa, vaan lyö kylmästi korville.
Tuhon äänistä on siis selkeästi kyse ja sävelten ripeä asettelu avautuu hyvin nopeasti selkeisiin tulkintamalleihin. Bändin soundi pureutuu niin modernin blackmetalin äkkipikaisiin tremolosahauksiin kuin railakkaasti viheltäviin syntikkaharmonioihin, rytmitysten pitäessä varmoin ottein kiinni railakkaasta temposta. Parhaimmillaan yhtye kuulostaa kiitettävän brutaalilta, vaikka äänikuva varsin kliininen onkin. Tyhjänpäiväistä tunnelmointia ei Neloselta löydy ja sen varjolla levy naulaa huomion muutamaksikin toviksi. Omaperäisyyteen yhtye ei kuitenkaan taivu ja mieleenjääviä ratkaisuja riffien aallokosta nousee hyvin harvakseltaan. The Oath onnistuu siis luomaan samaan aikaa vaikutuksen toisaalta valmiista tuhokoneesta ja toisaalta päämäärättömästä reuhuajasta. Ranskalaisena metalliyhtyeenä The Oath onnistuu varsin mallikkaasti. 4 on kansainvälisestikin ajateltuna varsin mallikas paketti modernia dark/metallia. Sisällön puolesta kuitenkin riittää petraamisen varaa, jotta todellinen pahuus iskostuisi yhtyeen ylle. Ympäripyöreä turvanpieksentä ei anna aihetta yleisön syvien rivien suosikkilapseksi.
Code666 julkaisemat levyt ovat viime vuosina aiheuttaneet lähinnä revenneitä leukaperiä ja kummastunutta kiinnostusta, yleensä musiikillisen kieroon kasvaneisuutensa vuoksi. Ranskalainen The Oath tekee kuitenkin poikkeuksen jatkumoon, sillä yhtyeen moderni dark/black metal ei erikoisuuksilla leveile ja täten siihen tulee suhtauduttua maanläheisen juurevasti. Yhtye ei edes koeta luoda ympärilleen mystisyyden pehmentävää auraa, vaan lyö kylmästi korville.
Tuhon äänistä on siis selkeästi kyse ja sävelten ripeä asettelu avautuu hyvin nopeasti selkeisiin tulkintamalleihin. Bändin soundi pureutuu niin modernin blackmetalin äkkipikaisiin tremolosahauksiin kuin railakkaasti viheltäviin syntikkaharmonioihin, rytmitysten pitäessä varmoin ottein kiinni railakkaasta temposta. Parhaimmillaan yhtye kuulostaa kiitettävän brutaalilta, vaikka äänikuva varsin kliininen onkin. Tyhjänpäiväistä tunnelmointia ei Neloselta löydy ja sen varjolla levy naulaa huomion muutamaksikin toviksi. Omaperäisyyteen yhtye ei kuitenkaan taivu ja mieleenjääviä ratkaisuja riffien aallokosta nousee hyvin harvakseltaan. The Oath onnistuu siis luomaan samaan aikaa vaikutuksen toisaalta valmiista tuhokoneesta ja toisaalta päämäärättömästä reuhuajasta.
