I know I sound like an old bastard saying this, but my stomach turns when I consider that Slayer are *supporting* Slipknot on the upcoming European tour.

It's supposed to be a co-headlining tour but it certainly is crippled and gay that Slayer should play before Slipknot...

By the way I picked up that Still Reigning DVD a few weeks ago, FUCKING RULES. Best part is when they show the brief backstage stuff at the end, and the final shot is of Lombardo just looking completely exhausted.

Here's my unprofessional professional opinion for ya:

SLAYER - Still Reigning DVD
2004: American Recordings

You can view this DVD in one of two ways: As a quick and easy way for Slayer to cash in on the widespread popularity of Reign in Blood... or an excuse to thrash it up like its 1986 all over again! Of course not all is the same, the audiences are certainly tamer these days, and included the odd person (read: poseur fag) in red and black striped clothing, but the music and the performance is just as ferocious as ever.*

As you probably already understand, this DVD contains all 28 minutes of Reign in Blood as the entree, with a dessert of six more tracks from the Hell Awaits to Seasons in the Abyss era. Tom recites all his classic intro lines for songs, such as his speech about their "love song", Necrophiliac, or the many ways to achieve Postmortem. Tom can't hit the first scream of Angel of Death anymore, but for the most part he can do everything else on the performance just fine.

This performance is also the debut of Slayer's much hyped "Wall of Blood" for the song Raining Blood, which is essentially a mechanism that allows it to literally rain gallons of fake blood onto the Slayer members as they play. Watching this part of the stage show is naturally unspeakably cool.

Aside from the entire "Reign in Blood" album performed, there is also the six song mini-concert of old stuff including classics such as War Ensemble, Necrophiliac and Spill The Blood. Also as the other special feature is an interview with the band titled "Slayer in their own words" in which the band tells their history, why they make music, what's it like for them to be play live and so on. Nothing overly spectacular but it's fairly humourous and is worth watching.

Bottom line: Did you miss Slayer back in the day? This is the answer and for a mere ten bucks there is no reason for you to not have this.


*disclaimer* I was in diapers in 1986, so I wouldn't really know for certain, but hey, it's fucking SLAYYYYYEEEERRRRRRRRRR

The only thing missing is Araya's wail, but he's an old fart now so it's okay. Other than that it's better than the original because the sound quality is superior, there is visible raining blood, and it was recorded in the only proper way to hear Slayer: live.
