The Official SymX forum "2005 albums of the year" thread

would have to say

1. John Petrucci-Suspended Animation

2. Dream Theater-Octavarium

3. Dimitri Shostakovich(russian composer he is dead, but its a recently recorded version by the berlin philharmonic orchestra) Symphony No. 5 its awesome its easily as powerful as any metal out there. especially the third movement.

In Order:

Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil
Behemoth - Demigod (US)
Kreator - Enemy of God
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Cryptopsy - Once Was Not
Marc Rizzo - Colossal Myopia

I really like 2 tracks on Octavarium, Root of All Evil is a good buildup track, and Octavarium is a fun song. The rest of the album isn't anything special, but it's hardly bad and the songs all share a unique identity, no two songs sound alike. As a whole, I think Octavarium was probably the fifth best release of the year.

Fourth is Opeth's Ghost Reveries. Ghost of Perdition and Baying of the Hounds are both very good tracks, not as good as Opeth classics, but still good. Beneath the Mire and Atonement are solid tracks, not really special standout tracks but solid tracks nonetheless. Then comes Reverie/Harlequinn Forest, which starts out as a good song, but by the end of the song, it moves to this really, really dumb riff. The album as a whole is solid, it really lacked any cool, chilling moments that Opeth had in their prime (MAYH's When and Demon of the Fall, Still Life's Godhead's Lament and Face of Melinda, Blackwater Park's Bleak and The Drapery Falls), but it's a more progressive effort than Deliverance or Damnation, and the addition of keyboards helps their sound (though sometimes it's unnecessary).

Third best album of the year is The Black Halo by Kamelot. March of Mephisto is a great opener, and the album just keeps on marching on with more and more power metal classics. The songs aren't really as unique and stand-alone as those found on Octavarium or Ghost Reveries, but they're very well-written and enjoyable, the entire album just flies by.

Second place is Nevermore's This Godless Endeavor. The solos are mindblowing, the riffs are thrashy, the songs are unique, and, most importantly, the production is clear. The entire album is filled with great tracks, Born, Final Product, Acid Words, Sentient 6, and This Godless Endeavor are all great tracks, but the rest of the album is still very good.

The best album of 2005 is Alien by SYL. The music is better than their SYL album, the lyrics are funnier and more absurd (just listen to Shitstorm), the production is great and by the end the album is just a great experience. The best tracks are Imperial/Skeksis, Shitstorm, Love?, Shine, We Ride, Possessions, Two Weeks, Thalamus, and, of course, Zen. That's right, all of them. Devin Townsend really shines here, and I can't wait for his next effort to compliment and upstage this.
