The Progressive/Avantgarde Metal Thread

Been listening to Pavillon Rouge lately, sort of an industrial extreme metal mix, pretty good stuff. not completely sure if it exactly fits the term "avante garde" or not.

I like Diabolical Masquerade but never really got how they were avant-garde. Either that or I accepted that they were avant-garde but started thinking the whole avant-garde tag was bullshit.

Well, they play a really theatrical, stylized version of black metal that (in my opinion) doesn't really utilize any of the classic tenets of black metal but still maintains the aesthetics/aura of black metal. I associate them a lot with Arcturus, actually.

I relate them a lot more to stuff like Opeth with the simple heavy/soft contrasts, only with shrieked vocals and a few theatrical elements. I guess it's different but it doesn't seem that innovative.

Those bands are tech, not avant garde
:err: I think your forgetting what the true definition of avant-garde is. "A group active in the invention and application of new techniques in a given field, especially in the arts" which would make Demilich and especially Gorguts avant-garde. If anyone tries disputing the fact that Obscura isn't avant-garde should be shot.

Good first post. I agree though, it's just not possible to say Obscura era Gorguts isn't avant-garde. Still haven't heard anything quite like it.

Thanks :). Sadly we may never hear something like Obscura though I suppose thats what makes it the great album it is. Also are any of you guys fans of non metal Avant-Garde music? any Arthur Russell fans? John Cage? Captain Beefheart? The Residents? The RIO movement?

Unless you consider Sleepytime Gorilla Museum non-metal (I kinda do... not really sure) then sadly no, but I'd love to get into some, I'll definitely check out the artists you listed, though. Thanks. :)
