I thought at first that his not dying there was not possible at first, but there are actually people who drill holes in their heads. They believe that increased blood flow to the brain makes you more intelligent, or something to that effect.

Read the book. Even bigger mind fuck than the film!
The first four pages alone contain the recipes to at least different types of explosives. But then again, all the book's written by the Fight Club dude (whose name I can't remember or spell, Chuck Something-or-other) are pretty fucked up.
