according to wikipedia it's more like 25%

and most of them are issued by the military for emergency/wartime use only, and cannot be carried anywhere outside the home without a permit, and permits are not generally issued to people unless they have really good reasons

i guess i learned something about switzerland today

Read more of the wikipedia; you don't need ANY kind of permit to purchase a semi-automatic rifle if you are Swiss and over 18.

Wasnt it Refraction who said swiss are provided with a firearm for their compulsory military service and so the data is horribly skewed?

Explain how this would 'horribly skew' the results? The have an assault rifle int heir house, an ACTUAL assault rifle int his case (ie: fully automatic) until they are discharged from military service; at which point they can have it converted to semi-automatic and keep it as civilians.

Somehow the period of time that they are in the military magically makes the gun not count or something?

granted, it does say that was the case until at least 2008. i can't really tell if schengen changed that, but okay, sure.

also, though

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

switzerland has among the highest rate of firearm-related deaths of all european countries (edit: i can't read, there's like 3 euro countries higher on the list)

Actually I mean it magically DOES count lol. I dont know shit about Switzerland. I am just going by what Refraction said. I will go there, check out the situ, and get back to you.

Well the Czech Republic is even lower so neener neener.

(Just kidding about the neener-neener of course; just saw an opening to show another European country with less-strict gun-laws then people probably expect).

That shit makes you WEIRD, man. I gobbled a few of 'em a year or so ago and didn't go to sleep for a while. When I awoke 14 hours later next to 4 pages of an alien typescript of my own invention that I had COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD the night before... I knew that I should probably stick to weed and LSD.

I like the US Constitution because it was designed to adapt as time goes on. To think otherwise is doing it a disservice, just as much as calling it "outdated" completely misses the point. I read it regularly, and even carry a copy in my car at all times because it FEELS GOOD DAMMIT.

Also, even my commie liberal tree-fucking faggot ass likes guns. I don't know why. It really is part of being American for whatever stupid reason. Much like enjoying ZZ Top, it's in the blood.

I'm late to the party. The party is over, we're on prescription drug abuse now, sorry. :loco:

While everyone who submits to the draft is given a gun, they are not allowed to use it and the ammunition is sealed in a box which cannot legally be opened. However I, and many other Swiss want to completely abolish the draft for precisely this reason. Most of the gun violence committed comes from illegal usage of army weapons, given to unqualified people, all in the name of national security. Fucking lol.
And a not on the culture here: If you do own a weapon, youd only ever take it out of the house for hunting or to go to the range. If you do otherwise, youd be considered a primitive nutjob, an opinion I share.
