I'm an actual slave to my goddam job. Freedom, my ass. The American Dream is a euphemism for indentured servitude, nothing more.
you're god damn right. i actually am having a serious problem with this right now. i got a new job (start march 1st) and also signed a lease for my own farm/house that has 10 acres of workable land in the CT river valley. but here's the problem:
in october, i had to drive the company sprinter van into NYC. it was an unfamiliar area that i had never been to before (required driving off of the streets and into various parks, etc. long story). when i was leaving that day, we were having a fucking SNOW STORM and i could barely see anything. rubbed up against a crosswalk signal (not while just driving on the street, but trying to drive out of a fucking public square and into the street) and put a 2-3' yellow scratch/dent into the upper passenger side of the van. now that sucks, and i admit that it is my fault. i have put about 50,000 miles on the thing and i personally believe that an accident is bound to happen (especially in NYC). this is unfortunately a cost of business and a risk that you take when you have an employee drive your company vehicle, am i rite?
long story short, i told my boss that i am quitting and he started to freak out because i have a lot of core responsibilities within this farm. gave him 5 weeks notice, which is apparently not enough for him. when i had the accident in the van, i agreed to help pay it off (quoted at $2500 because they claim that it needs a new door, bullshit). i never said that i would give him any money, but i was doing things like making deliveries or going to farmers markets in my own vehicle, using my own gas without compensation. also, when someone broke my company phone i had to pay the $180 insurance deductible out of my pocket. now he decides that i am now totally liable for the damage to the van and is considering taking me to small claims court.
anyone know anything about these laws? i am almost 100% sure that this falls under "vicarious liability" and that i am not required to pay anything. also, this happened in october and i think he wouldn't have much of a case if he told the courts that he just decided to make me pay for it four months after it happened, when i told him i was quitting. any advice appreciated.
but basically we are all slaves in this country and I am fucking ECSTATIC to be leaving this job
