Power Metal is slightly better. I can hear why they might have been labelled as power metal but it's still pretty poor power metal. However the music is heavier, the riffs are better and the voice has changed to a poor mans Manowar. That doesn't mean it gets a high rating, just higher than the others

Ok so I got up to Far Beyond Driven. You're right about the early albums they have almost nothing redeemable about them. I remember some cheesy titles and the varying voice throughout but I remember pretty much nothing else. Vulgar obviously has some memorable moments and the songs aren't terrible. Phil's voice does have some moments of glory and although I don't like the song Walk I do think Phil does a good job on the song. Driven didn't hit me has hard, I didn't hate it completely but I definitely prefer Cowboys. Whether or not I'd listen to it too often if I owned it I don't know but it would be my choice. I'll listen to the last two today.

I have Damage Plan, There's some good stuff and there's some radio stuff that's maybe more towards Slipknot? or Mudvayne?

I reckon they are carbon copies in parts, but there is no way either album is a copy of the other.

It's not even like the differences between early Judas Priest and late Judas Priest, or new Metallica and old Metallica. It's like they were a completely different band and I don't think it's just the singers fault. They really seemed to be chasing a cock rock crowd.
Oh I don't think I could go near Slipknot, my daughter has listened to slipknot

Yeah for sure. Definitely chasing the cock rock. Funny considering they helped wave the flag for real metal in the 90's. Cowboys and later is a huge change from the ground up.
I don't know if I really wanna say Slipknot I'm not really qualified thank god. But for sure a more radio direction at times. There's a couple cool tracks.

The problem is that Phil's voice does sound like Kyle and it's difficult to say Pantera started anything given what they did prior to Cowboys. But bands sound like each other all the time it doesn't mean they copy each other. Phil definitely took his voice further than Kyle did though.

Cowboys is almost like a different band. AC/DC, Maiden, plenty of bands changed singer but you hear their past in the current, Pantera is chalk and cheese. Cowboys comes off as a more mature release with some good riffs, good music and some ballsy songs. I think part of that goes with Vulgar but Vulgar falls down a bit because songs like Walk and Fucking Hostile are not a good as what they could be given they are so memorable. That goddam scream that opens out Trendkill is amazing, not sure it's needed, but it is amazing. But when Phil gets growlier later on during the album I don't think he pulls it off as well as other artists do. Again some decent riffage but less memorable songs. Listening to Steel now and it still sounds like Phil's trying to be angrier than the music really needs him to be, it works are times and it does work well, other times he just seems to be trying too hard. None of the songs at the moments are too memorable though.

I understand what he's saying about isolation making it difficult but Drik's just appeared on a single with a Norwegian band. Plenty of bands are recording shit separated, surely they don't have to wait until this is over to start recording.

Yeah it's hard to say because their albums were very close together. I've also read one interview where Kyle says that they were influenced by them and another later one that said they weren't. Pantera certainly went a lot farther with the sound. Who knows. It doesn't really matter I guess.

Yeah I didn't really get too much out of Steel. Part of it is because they went back to one guitar which leaves it a bit empty after having two on the last couple albums. I'd have to listen again about Phils voice and trying to hard.
You're completely right about hearing the past on other albums even with the change. There's non of that. It's like a brand new band.

I reckon Kyle and Phil have been playing the media for years. Their stories keep changing, but they are friends so I reckon it's a game for them. I do prefer Exhorder, partly because I've been listening to them for longer. But Cowboys was definitely a positive change for Pantera and it would have been really interesting to see how Exhorder would have evolved if they kept going.

I actually didn't listen to Steel all the way through. I just couldn't get in to it. Phil trying too hard might not be the best description. But there are times where it seems like he's more angry than the song needs him too be, or he beefs up the aggression part way through a song that doesn't need it. There is no doubt that the guy can scream aggression when he needs to I just felt it wasn't always needed.
