The what's going on in Thrash thread

So I was reading a few comments about the new Exodus song (which I know is a mistake) and it seems like KK Downing isn't the only person to hate Andy Sneap, everyone does! The comments go from "everything he does sounds the same", to "he makes Saxon sound like Megadeth and Megadeth sound like Overkill", which is just a more descriptive way of again saying everything he does sounds the same. They bitch about his layering and his overall production and they bitch about new albums not sounding like old albums (yet at the same time sounding the same, go figure!)

Maybe some of the comments are justified after all if a guy produces 100 albums and he has a style that style will more than likely come out similarly on the majority of albums produced. But do they all sound the same, or just similar?

For me after only two listens I think the new Exodus is about where I kind of expected them to be. I do hope there is something heavier on offer but this song seems to follow on from Blood In Blood Out. Sure I can hear Sneap's production but to me it doesn't sound enough like the Grinding Wheel, or Wings Of War that I immediately think he's made Exodus into an Overkill cover band (or vice versa). I also don't immediately think this is Mega-Exodus Endgame either. But to me it does scream Exodus. Maybe I'm missing something

Of course there is also a select few who also hate the lyrics, the vocals, the solos and the guitar playing. There are those who think the songs are too long, too short, not fast enough and too fast. So generally I accept that everyone reviewing this one song is an idiot, but should I hate Sneap too?

I reckon just about any label could because metal really is becoming a common thing here again. Selling numbers wont ever be as high as the US or Europe but they'd still sell and sell at a high price because of out shitty Aussie dollar. Bands like Alestorm, Dropkick Muprhys and a few others have set up local distro deals with a mob here and there is always new stock arriving, maybe not in all sizes but definitely new stock and it's selling. A label with hundreds of bands should be able to do the same.
Speaking of merch. I got an email from the Anthrax store. They advertised a POT baseball cap for $15. Then when I click the link it says $20, with 20% off at check out. That's not $15. That's $16. So I email them and ask them how much. And told them of the email. So they say. $16. I know it's only a dollar and that's not the deciding factor for me. It's still a good deal (depending on what they charge for shipping). But I'm pretty sure if you advertise a price, that's what they have to sell it to you for.
Stupids.

No you aren't missing anything lol. Bunch of bitches. I don't think all his produced bands sound the same either. You put one of his albums on and they are the best sounding albums in a bands catalog. People just hate someone who is on top. And you know many of those people complaining about Exodus were never fans in the first place. Either you get it, or you don't.
I also hope that the new song is the least heavy song on the album.

Yeah I feel the same way. He could have donated it to schools or something else. Or ya know. Elektra needs a new pony.

Donating it would have been the Christian thing to do, although maybe Dave is only Christian when it suits him :)
Realistically he could give them away as prizes to fans and it would still look better than selling to the highest bidder. The only thing lower than doing that is some arsehole buying them under the guise of "i'll put them in my studio for all to use."

In this country it's illegal to go against an advertised price. We've had companies forced by law to honour web orders than got put in for $0 when web designers have stuffed up their websites. It's also not just Australian businesses, Sony got stung a few years ago when a digit fell off the price of their consoles during a web update, it wasn't advertised although word spread fast and before they fixed it they were forced to honour something like 300 consoles at a ridiculous figure (something like $39 instead of $399). I doubt any one here would kick up a stink for a single dollar but it is the principal of the matter even if it's a genuine mistake.

I tend to agree that people just hate someone on top. Tall Poppy syndrome is alive and well in the metal world! Sadly I've pretty much got used to it with bands, seems like the first response of so many people when an old band releases something new is negative. So I guess picking on Sneap shouldn't really surprise me either, but once upon a time there used to be praise for metal producers, even to the point that when a name was released people praised the band for their choice before even hearing the album. Now days you name a producer and it seems like half the population already hate your album.

Both Gary and Zetro said the album was going to be heavier, they bloody owe us!!

Is this what you're talking about? Or is this something else? Who does he think he is? Eddie Van Halen?

https://bravewords.com/news/megadeth-you-can-own-dave-mustaine-s-stage-played-guitar

Yeah that's what I read. And I also have to admit to not reading it properly the first time. I kind of assumed it was all old gear, out with the Dean in with the Gibson type of thing. Now I read that it's a played once sale because he's a legend. Still not overly excited by the offers but MegaDave needs to be MegaRich.

Haha, the same dickheads talking about Exodus sounding bad because of Sneap are now saying:
Exodus peaked with Bonded By Blood and haven't been relevant since.
Dukes made them Metalcore and irrelevant.
Dukes was too good for them on Exhib B.
From Impact onwards they haven't been ablet to write decent lyrics
and Impact was were they stopped having thrash riffs
I'm starting to wonder if Dave Wright moonlights under a heap of different names on Metal Archives :)

Yeah for some weird reason I don't think he's really a full time by the book Christian. Not sure why I think that... :erk:

Oh that guy! what a dirt bag :p

Yeah I'm pretty sure it is here too. Like you say. It's the principle!

Yeah you're absolutely correct on that. I don't know what happened. I'm so glad Testament found Sneap. The Gathering still crushes. And when that came out the difference between that album and so many others was really noticeable. He's just kept it up. I agree it pretty polished. But since when is it a crime to sound good?

Because they are getting too much attention and they aren't their "secret band" anymore. People are fucking miserable.

He's Christian when it matters :)

Yeah thankfully not much ever came from him. I kind of hope Covid shut down his recording studio because he spent too much on guitars.

I like an old school 80's album as much as the next person but we don't have to live the 80's any more. Even if a band like Exodus was to go back to old tech and try and produce something that came out of the 80's the same people would be bitching that it doesn't sound right.

If Exodus does come out sounding like a carbon copy of Testament then maybe I'll send Sneap a raspberry or two but until then if they just sound like they've used the same producer I don't care.
