Lets not forget they signed bands to stupid deals and control so much of the bands saleable product that they pretty much control which bands are successful.

It's an interesting premise. That label rips me off and owns everything I create, but they sell everything I create and more make me popular and rich. However once I get rich enough I decide to own my own creations, but I still require the label to sell everything because I can only write the music they can sell it. Now I'm rich off the money the label gave me and I'll tell those coming after me that labels screwed me over until I found the right one, got rich and made my own. The label knows this is true but accepts less of a deal because less is better than none, but the label still needs to pay for their expensive buildings and CEO's. How do they do this? By signing more bands. Which is good, expect the deals have to be harsher to make the money they are used to.

So from that round about circle I'll still blame the labels, but I'm also now blaming the bands that created their own labels.

(damn that's a hell of a waffle for a Saturday morning pre-coffee!!)

At the end of the day though everything is a business and while they might not all go into business wanting to take over the world no one goes into business to make enough to live on the poverty line.
