This may sound a bit weird but...

ok but now.. should i leave the shotgun in the hall or should i open the priesthole and then? and why does the song end with "i never had the nerve to make the final cut" - why cut if i have a shotgun?! :) or is it cutting the phoneline? ('just then the phone rang") ...'just then' the phone never rings anyway

.... so i searched the net and found (if anyone interested or not..):
"There is a line near the beginning of the title track ’’The Final Cut’’

’’If you negotiate the minefield in the drive
And beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes
And if you make it past the shotgun in the hall
Dial the combination
Open the priesthole
And if I’m in I’ll tell you what’s behind the wall’’

The uniqueness lies in the fact that after ’’And if I’m in I’ll tell .....’’ you can’t hear anything more due to the sound of the shotgun in the hall , implying you cannot make it past ’’the hall’’ yet the lyrics are mentioned so that you realise what exactly you couldn’t hear."

" As a concept album, it is in fact much more coherent than The Wall, focusing its rage and bitterness upon the destruction of the post-war consensus on peace, the welfare state and international co-operation by short-sighted and self-serving world leaders. Additionally, it explores the havoc wrought upon individuals by war and how scarring experiences, if unacknowledged through pride and fear, can cut a person off from the rest of humanity. The Final Cut is an altogether underrated release."

"Roger Waters focuses on the details of the human
experience and illustrates how far removed the
common man is from the political machine that
determines so much of his destiny."

well.. there is no 100% answer out there, but one I'm sure, that this song was really not about telling me to cut my fucking wrist :D

I think I open a thread about not-understood words..

and so u have, nice one.

i dunno too much about this layered, metaphorical way of writing this lyric, but to me it says something like this:

Be patient about things inhabiting your world, as they are your traps - 'traps' as in events that might bring u down (as Dhatura said like).
Patience and focus will conquer that.

Basically that goes for every line in the lyric, as dogs are bastards around you, the cold electronic eyes (government?).
When you make it towards where your soul is, you are evidently walking round and inside a house, which is in most cases yours and represents a safe haven.
How you really really are, deep inside - when you can sense that (coz u've come that far already), you can easily feel en sense what the combination should be.

what's the fucking 'priesthole' then? pidgeonhole like? is it pure dedication (to the house, a higher power)? but what does a priest have to do inside a house??

and the last line is as easy as difficult to see through..
this whole thing was about [you], and the last sentence he switches to [me]! so basicly, is there always someone who is there right behind/-side you? what is that, or isn't it anything? what's that wall, "behind" it?
is that the afterlife? another incarnation? is it another house, another room where you can easily walk to, but you can only reach it by leaving the room yer in now? and if so, you prolly need to go past the gun again?

priesthole – in which Roman Catholics used
to hide their priests during times of persecution in the late 16th century
(could mean some secret shelter, emergency exit..)
