To blastbeat or not to blastbeat...

Constant = boring. Even in the early 90's when I was first discovering death metal constant doublebass and constant blastbeats were annoying.

Sparingly = UNRULY. I love blastbeats but since they can be so manic, they should only be used when called for. My favorite blastbeat is in Charlie Don't Cheat by S.O.D., and it although it is constant throughout that under-a-minute song, it actually changes characteristics several times (and is extremely fast).

In summary, blastbeats are like wicked bass fills. If you do them all the time they aren't noticed, but if used sparingly they are UNRULY. See Kayo Dot's debut or latest Fantomas album for great examples of sparingly used blastbeats. I stand up and take notice when they occur.

Exactly.

Something that comes to mind when I think of this is Sunchariot. They don't use a lot of blastbeats, even when they could! In the song "Languor" there is a blast beat for about 20 seconds- even though it is completely normal and not even that fast, their placement makes it seem like genius!

The only thing worse than unnecessary blastbeats perhaps is unnecessary double bass drumming (see: derivative power metal bands from Italy and other Mediterranean hotspots]. That said, the absolute worst case of masturbatory double bass kicks were on that Wintersun album. Holy shit, it was like listening to a woodpecker on steroids, and worse still, the drum pattern had NOTHING to do with the other instrumentation. Regardless of riff, or vocals, or whatever, the drums just went: dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka dukka ....arse.

Blastbeats do not get boring by themselves, as long as the music is good and appropriate, you can blast through the whole thing- and it'll sound fucking great! (example : Nattens Madrigal by Ulver). But as has been said, things like old Dark Funeral are simply boring and uninspired.

I can't stand blast beats. I also hate constant double bass (power metal). These techniques merely compensate for a lack of drumming talent.
