TOP 10 GUITARISTS

Yeah exactly, I am really surprised at the attention this guy has received lately. That kind of music has always made me... Some of these guys should really take lessons from MJR. He can shred with the best of them but, he writes kick ass complex music not backing track oriented music.

AMEN.

batio is a joke.... great show, horrible everything else. so bad in fact that i have yet to finish an entire video of his.

my favorites (as a combo of skill and writing compatability with my tastes)
MJR (sym x)
Kiko Laureiro (angra, solo)
Victor Smolski (rage)
Chris Oliva (savatage)- mainly for his writing
Erik Ravn (wuthering heights) -fairly good chops, but more writing than skill
Marty Friedman (Megadeth)
Andre Olbrich (Blind Guardian)- writing only. he's a melodic master imo
Anders Exo Kragh (beyond twilight)- mainly writing, but when he wants to, he can shred.
Kai Hansen (gammaray, helloween) - i just really apreciate his writing style. it's always a good mix of rythm and lead

Some of Batio's stuff sounds pretty cool at times but in general you guys are right. He's basically a shredder who's composition basically sounds like utter crap. Why the heck did I put him on my list? I am changing that now. Frank Marino, of Mahogany Rush.

Im a bit partial to Kai Hansons stuff myself, just raw energy without all the schoolin. I'll say I really like Criss Olivas solos as well. He doesnt sound like a tecnician he played what he felt, it has a great flowing and melodic feel to me and I found him somewhat unique. His sound certainly is, no mistaking his tone nor his riffs. He was also one of the heavy metal pioneers, recording first in '83 so he wasnt one of these clones though his VanHalen influence can be heard (sometimes) early on. I'll always feel he was a great loss.

cro4eva: To me that is compositional skills, not guitar skills. Writing a great song does not make one a great guitarist. Michael Angel Batio doesn't write good songs (in my opinion) but he is one hell of a guitar player.

My point being that if your not the best shredder that does not exempt you from my great guitar player list. Especially if you have written killer songs... however if your wicked fast and have all the sterilized over practiced tricks but cant come up with great, somewhat unique riffs and songs, your not up for my consideration, because I'll rarely listen to you. For example this is why I might pick Mustaine over Freidman, not that I really know how the song writting process went with that team but I really have a thing for many Megadeth riffs, the solos are just the iceing but would have simply been another wicked solo over top of another typical song. Eddie V is another example, he has been somewhat surpassed by the melting pot clones but theres no mistaken an EV riff or his solos for that matter. As well as the fact that he was a pioneer which takes my primary consideration of "what did you bring to the table".

Hope this makes sense even if techique and speed is all someone else cares about.

Alright. Care to elaborate?

That seems like an awfully big word for someone who never does, but would rather start crap all the time with cute wittle one liners that go no where.

So "ace".... care to elaborate on what your problem is with my distaste for death metal and black metal ?

It was definitely Mustaine behind 99% of the riffing. Marty's done some great writing over the years too...his solo albums are great. The old stuff (Dragon's Kiss and some of the Cacophony stuff) can be kind of boring and stereotypical of what a Shrapnel release was back then, but stuff off of Scenes and Introduction, though not metal, have some great stuff on them. I've always loved his soloing...his solo on Tornado of Souls is pretty much what inspired me to want to start really taking guitar seriously. His phrasing and sense of melody are flat out incredible at times. I have a really hard time watching him though....just SEEING his right hand is enough to cause a mild case of tendonitis.

I agree that his solos on Megadeth were great, but once again he had a great riffer giving him something to bounce off of. The Cacophony stuff... yea, sorta of a, OK that was awsome but wheres the song. Same with Racer X & Yngwie

So whats up with his hand, I guess I dont know about this ? I saw Megadeth open for Priest back in 91 maybe and I didnt notice but we were back aways.

Someday maybe Ill check out his solo stuff... how much money do you guys spend on CD's......... geeze !

Batio's best work was when he played in a local Chicago rock band called Holland. Their only release "Little Monsters", was actually a decent pop/rock/metal album. I made the mistake of seeing Batio live about 4-5 years ago, and it absolutely sucked. Sounded sloppy at times, and his guitar tone was simply awful. On the up side, I always used to have a rip-roaring good time at the Holland concerts in the 80's...

Nothing wrong with your distate. I respect your opinion. Just pointing out that your blanket statement about how none of them are worth mentioning as decent guitarists is either a proof of ignorance as I had assumed, or the result of some kind of complex stemming from your extreme distaste. Point is, your comment was objectively erroneous, whether you like the genre or not, of which I care about nothing.

your right, I should not imply not worth mentioning and the bleach thing was harse but it came to mind when thinking of stains. As in lighten the thing up, or get a singer would suit me fine... lol> black metal, forget about it, bleach fosho. But the obvious reality, is I was saying they dont meet enough specs on that list I made. Im probably wrong because I cant listen to enough of it to hear the full gamet but then, was'nt that another item I mentioned. I do like ?Ackerfeld? and his spectrum, but not much in others I have tried and had no desire to seek further. So I can sorta put a blanket on them when the musical tecnique just doesnt interest me. Oh well...

you're funny...he does seem so uncomfortable...his stuff with a real band like Megadeth at their peak is where he shines...his solo stuff is blah! Dragon's Kiss is a terrible album, really.

Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth is one example of many talented DM guitarists. That he can do what he does, AND sing at the same time, is even more noteworthy.

I'll never understand how Opeth is Death Metal...that's just silly. They're just metal...everyone does growling vocals now except "progressive"(God I hate that meaningless term) and power metal stuff.

Prog DM if we're splitting hairs. or Gothenburg (even though they're from Stockholm ). You know what I meant. Razoredge isn't familiar with actual DM bands or else I would have mentioned bands like Necrophagist.

I saw some Rizzo Youtube videos and as you say, there's no flamenco style incorporated...in fact, they're not very impressive at all...I sampled his first solo effort CD and thought it was interesting...that's all...wouldn't consider myself a fan...just offering a suggestion.

Ah, I was thinking in the context of Kiko Loureiro, because I had asked to see other examples. I still want to see examples of players that people like better though, for those that don't like Kiko. I'm just curious, since I'm not a guitar player myself and I want to learn about new players.

For starters...could someone recommend me something or show me a Satriani video on youtube that displays his talent well? I just want to see why everyone loves him, since I haven't been able to get into his playing yet. Again, I'm just giving the benefit of the doubt since I might not have seen what he really does.

best bet is to forget about Satriani then and forget that he even plays guitar or gave people like Vai, Mustaine, Hammet or Skolnick lessons. Hes bald, aint pretty, and his legs are thin...
