To me, the best of all time means bands that have the most 5-star albums that get the most airplay in my hallowed halls. This criteria makes it much easier to lay down a fairly accurate list.
For me it is something like this:
Savatage/TSO
Black Sabbath/Ozzy
Therion
Blue Oyster Cult
Iron Maiden
Following close behind is Priest, Nightwish and Deep Purple.

Only 5 :zombie:! Even with 50 would be impossible for me... but, maybe I´m going to rate them counting bands with more than 10 studio records that I got the whole discography. Not exactly might be my favourites but it´s a good spot.

It's so partial, I mean either you mention the ones everybody talk about since Elvis or so, or you mention stuff that personally appeal you regardless of quality, sales, etc.
So trying to be as cool headed as possible and limiting myself to rock/metal (in no particular order):
