Top 5 Metal Albums

Metal can be characterized by the use of highly distorted guitars, double bass, sreaming of the phrase "666", use of metal horns, worshipping of satan, lyrics containing highly suggestive suicidal imagery, and the occasional goat sacrifice.

Hope that clears it up for you. BTW, please do not list Tool or Dream Theater in your list. They are not "metal".

Heavy metal music
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that emerged as a defined musical style in the 1970s, having its roots in hard rock bands which, between 1967 and 1974, mixed blues and rock to create a hybrid with a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterised by the use of highly-amplified distortion. Out of heavy metal various subgenres later evolved, many of which are referred to simply as "metal".

Yes, I've already seen that definition. It traces the origins of heavy metal but now the genre developed into so much more than mere "hard rock music with heavy distortion".

What's your definition of metal?

What's your definition of metal?
Hmm, I think that definition pretty much covers all the genres of metal. I personally would not include Metal in the rock genre, imo it should be a seperate genre. Although one can see the evolution of metal from rock music. I agree though, nowadays there is a huge difference in what was called heavy metal in the 80's with what we have today. Although it is all still metal, just to different degrees.

But still, the question remains: "What makes "metal" metal?

The only problem with that definition is that although modern heavy metal takes a lot of influence from hard rock, e.g. Zeppelin or Deep Purple, it also takes a lot of influence from the likes of Motorhead, which although Lemmy has always detested labeling the music he makes, is closer to punk than hard rock.
