Top Mixing Engineers?

Yeah, didn't mean it to sound aggressive either, just that he is quite outspoken and about his mesa preferences (and most other things). I'm lucky to have had conversations w/ him so I thought I'd share that info.
The midrange on the guitars on TGCD is nothing short of phenomenal. That is actually one of my all time favorite productions across the board. I do know that he usually mixes a 57, 421 and 121 on a single guitar cab.

Oh no doubt dude, I'm definitely a fella of strong opinions as well, so believe me I can take it as well as I can dish it! (just like with my flatulence :D) Yeah, TGCD is a fantastic production, though there's something about the guitars that kinda irks me; the midrange is perfect, I think it's just generally a lack of heaviness. Would you (or anyone else) happen to know what amps were used on that album? I know they use Damage Control stuff live (and are endorsees), though that of course doesn't necessarily mean it found its way onto the album...

Now "Ghost Reveries," though, is the standard-setter tone for me.

gotta say no one comes close to andy wallace, umm, in history, at least for me.

when all is said and done i still go back to RATM RATM as the most astounding like anything i've heard. it's so fn good.

terry date, sneap, staub are also up there. andy sneap really opened my ears to engineering as it was the first time i cared about production really. he was like the gateway engineer for me. he holds his own against anyone really. and in metal IMO he is still untouched.

Kurt Ballou, Andrew Schneider, Joel Hamilton, Matt Bayles.....not prototypically metal but I definitely love their work. They mostly track what they mix too.

Took me a while to have an opinion ahahah!
I'd say Jacob Hansen and Tue Madsen are my two faves metal producers/mixers. Yeah! ahah!
