Tube sockets? WTF?

Alright, so I sold my JSX on ebay about a month ago, and just got this message from the buyer:

I was playing the JSX today at a medium volume for the first time, lead channel volume about half up and the overall volume half up, and the fourth tube socket failed. I was using the tunes you sent and the JJ tubes. I would like to get $100 dollars back for repair or I will send it to you and you get it repaired.

Are you fucking kidding me!? She seriously expects me to just cough up money out of the blue? Fat fucking chance. Basically, I'm wondering if I should just tell her to shove it, cuz it was working perfectly when I sold it, but if she tries to file a claim with ebay, will it get anywhere, seeing as how she already left feedback? (neutral, I might add, cuz apparently I didn't ship it fast enough, so that doesn't make me inclined to do her any favors either)

Is she a repair tech? How does she know that the tube socket failed? Has she been changing the tubes? How can anybody know that she didn't damage the socket herself if it is actually broken?

The same thing happened to me on a VHT I just bought. I'd at least give her some money for new tubes, because tubes can go bad at any time.

I know it was probably working perfectly when you had it, but tubes are little bitches. They have minds of their own, and can fucking rape you in the ass with a 14" in strap on while you're playing a gig in front of 20 million people.

The guy who sold me the VHT said: "There's nothing I can do about it." I thought that was kinda messed up, but that's how it goes sometimes.

By "socket," she probably just meant the fourth tube.

If I were you, I'd just save yourself the BS and send her some cheap replacement tubes. That's a done deal. What she decides to do with them is her business. Hahahaha, it'll be totally funny when she just throws some tubes in there, and the amp explodes because she didn't bias it correctly, but that won't be yer fault, L;)L.

So, yeah, just send her some tubes, or refund her enough money for new tubes.

WHAT!? Don't fucking send her tubes...it's not your responsibility. That's like me buying an amp, taking it home for 3 weeks and then expecting the shop I bought it from to just replace the tubes when *I* blew them. That's bullshit.

Marcus, unless you had a warranty or guarantee other than "item will arrive as described", she ain't got shit on you. She has had it for almost a month...I would think it's safe to say if anything came up it would turn in your favor. She blew a tube...I mean...it happens...not your fault.

Hahahahaha, god I love you guys - yeah, I'm with you on this one Mike, I never once even considered giving her jack shit, but as I expected she just messaged me threatening to "file a claim with ebay." However, if you guys think (as I do, but I wanna be sure) that she won't have any ground to stand on if she does, then XeS and Schismatic are on the right track with guessing my response! :heh:

I bought a used head from a guy and one of the power tubes blew a week later, it was acting normal up until then, but I EXPECTED to buy new tubes anyways for a second hand amp. I didnt go running crying to the guy because his 3 year old amp tube blew.

Heres the Common Rule:

Buy a Second Hand amp: PUT NEW TUBES IN IT

Tell her to fuck herself (or just explain it)

Um, if she wanted a warranty or guarantee she should have bought new. If it works when I recieve an item from the ebay then that's it for me. If it breaks a day, a week, a month later that's my problem. I know the risks of buying used.

Exactly...the item arrived in working order. How do you know she didn't do something to cause it? Worked fine when it left your hands...arrived fine...what's the only thing that changed? Her using it.

"pic or it didn't happen." haha, just kidding.

If I were in your shoes I'd offer to pay for the cheapest 12ax7 around. It'll fix her problem and you did something that wasn't required of you. Tell her again it was working fine when you had it and there were no signs of things blowing. I mean it's a JSX, it's not like it falls apart every chance it gets. Tubes are the most common thing to go anyway, so the overall issue is NOT THAT BIG A DEAL. Even if a person I got an amp from is responsible for blown tubes and junk I'd probably just cover it myself, get something I like and not have to worry about going through someone else.

Demanding payment for something that's not your fault ain't cool in my book. She should have asked nicely if you would consider helping out.

Dudes, I went thru something very similar when I sold my Mesa 2:90 that had just been re-tubed with a whole new set of JJ's. The guy got it and said that one channel was quieter than the other and therefore he couldn't use it in stereo as he had intended. Apparently turning one knob up a little higher to compensate was an impossibility.

Anyway, I asked him to check several things and report what he found and he never came back with anything but 'I tested a bunch of things and it's still doing it'. I was lucky I guess cause I had sold it thru a classified ad but since he had paid via paypal he immediately tried to file a fraud claim and get $350 back. He only paid me $750. Fortunately for me, I had stated 5 times in writing before I shipped it that once it left my hands it was AS IS. Paypal told him to piss off cause he didn't buy it thru ebay. He tried to reverse the charges thru his credit card and apparently they said much the same. About half-way thru this month long ordeal, he had listed it on the same website with no mention of the issues he claimed it had.

Right off the bat I told him to contact UPS and file a claim but he waited 2-3 weeks to do that. Then UPS told him that it wasn't their fault. I had told him to take the amp to a tech and get a written estimate and I'd consider helping pay for any repairs. He said he called a guy and the guy told him it'd be $350 to fix even though he hadn't seen the amp. I told him I wouldn't take anything but a written estimate seriously. The dude refused to take it to a tech 'because it would take too long to get back'. So, I told him sorry and you're on your own.

I gave him a list of things to check starting with simple shit like rolling tubes to see if it followed one tube, etc. Dude refused to do what I asked. What else can a reasonable cracker do?

Tell her to fuck herself (or just explain it)

+1. Explain her how to fuck herself. And then politely tell her that tubes go to shit every now and then, and you are not going to give her a hundred bucks to replace a tube that worked fine a month ago when you sold the amp. If she doesn't get the point, demand a $200 compensation because it was, in a way, her fault that we were banned from the Garden of Eden in the first place.

Hahahaha, you guys suck.

But yeah, it's definitely not your fault that the tubes went bad after she bought it. It sucks, but it happens.

Sending her new tubes is the nice thing to do, but you really don't have to send her jack shit.

I bet you most likely this person has the amp plugged directly into a power outlet instead of a power conditioner of some sort. The moment her power spiked - bam! goodbye power tube. At my practice space the outlets are horrible and the two times I've seen someone plug directly into the wall from the amp, a power tube gets blown and fails. I say you don't owe them anything - I'd say it's safe practice that when buying used gear is to have it setup upon arrival (new tubes, bias, etc).

When i bought my mesa off ebay half the tubes in it were smashed and glass all over the inside of the head but i knew the score i just bought a new set and stuck them in i wouldent expect the guy i bought it off to give a shit.

Marcus this bitch is trying to take you for a ride fuck her:hotjump:

Jesus it would be one thing if she just didn't have a clue and thought a bad valve was a big deal but it sounds like she is being rather cuntish with the feedback issue and the treats. Explain to her nicely how there is more of a chance of Gary Glitter being put in charge of an orphanage than you giving her back any money.

Most important question hasn't been asked yet - Is she hot?

How are we going to give any sort of advice if we don't know if she's hot? That's nuts!

I bought a home a while back and my porch light burnt out. I want a new light bulb now! If it's been a month, she has no leg to stand on. Hope yer Orange gives you years of good service. Glad you like the new amp better.

P.S. you got me gassing for one thanks to your clips, jackass. You owe me $100.00 that I can apply to one, LOL!
