Fuck you being able to go to MetalCamp. I can't attend any out of country festivals this year due to lack of money. Anyway, pass me your mobile number closer to August and stuff and we can meet up, have a few drinks and whatnot! :3

I'm counting down the days untils it's release. I remember how I reacted when I finally got Battle Metal. I was on a high for the rest of the day. So God only knows how I'll react when I get my hands on a copy of The Varangian Way

Battle Metal > The Vagina Way
Sounds about right. I'm more in favor of my much beloved rasputin, one more and RRR than this album.
Wasnt a fan of the 80's cock rock solo to be fair, it did infact make me lol as I thought it had been added for cheese until it hit me it had been going for about half a minute.:zombie:
There are still many bits I liked about the album, don't get me wrong, i'll still be at the gigs jigging my ass off and butchering the lyrics via my drunken vocal 'ability'. But there were several points where the album just didnt sound like Turisas to me. I can't honestly think of any other way to discribe it right now since I only listened to the full album about 15 minutes before I started typing up this post.

It's good when bands change and develop their style, but I feel Turisas have thrown in some old stale "fads" in music rather then actually bother to try something new. Along with that... lol@ .Midi trumpets. Seriously, sounds like they should be in a 32 bit video game.

"Go now... And don't look back! Bring my greetings... to the greeat King!!" lol.

I would have liked the album alot more if it wasn't for the new growling present - sounds so generic and flat, nothing like the awesome and original growling we're used to in Battle Metal.

There are a few (and few at most) elements of the album which I really love, ironically, they're the parts which sound like the Turisas who made 'Battle Metal'

What's this difference people keep talking about? I can't hear any change in the type of growls used  Mathias sounds like...well Mathias, I think.

Its not new growling, its the use of Mathias's clean vocals which I think are pretty good. There was alot more growling on BM, but you expect that, as the album theme is about BATTLE.

I really think nygard took a step up on the clean vocals.. The tracks he layed down with his voice were beautifully done.. could almost bring a man to tears from beauty  but fucking amazing album. i cant get enough of it. Vocals in Varangian compared to Battle Metal is bar none no contest. Varangian takes the cake on that one :headbang:

Cant wait to buy the real album and have it in my hands.. Having the promo just isnt... real. u know? good music like this deserves to be bought.

It may sound 80's but remember there are no guitar solos whatsoever on TVW. All solos all played on violin, so that at least sets it apart from your average Slash solo :)

To quote the great Will Ferrell "Doesn't anybody notice this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!"

does NO ONE notice the difference between the growling in Varangian Way and in Battle Metal? The growling present in Battle Metal can be seen in the Varangian Way on 'Holmagard and Beyond' and a tiny bit of 'Fields of Gold' I think it is. The rest of the growling has been replaced by a much more Black / Death metal style of growl, which is the equivilant to someone screaming instead of singing (battle metal harnessed the growl more so through rythm and natural singing in a deep tone) and it sounds totally not-turisas.

Nygard's normal singing is good and much improved upon, though a little cheesy in some places.

And yeah, everyone does keep saying 'but the guitar solo's were done on a violin' ...so what? That doesn't give it the right to sound cheesy and relativly bland in comparison to authentic guitar solo's. If I said the guitars in Burzum's old albums were played by an elephant.. would it make you cringe less and want to listen to the album more? probably not.

If I said the guitars in Bathory's old albums were played by an elephant.. would it make you cringe less and want to listen to the album more?

Who the hell cringes from listening to old Bathory, if not from pure pleasure of course :Smug:

Don't know about the cheesiness of the solos to be honest. I've always loved 80's hardrock so maybe I'm not the one to judge...

Grr was in a rush to type (due to being at work) and Bathory was in my head. I meant Burzum :)

Don't worry, I can hear it too. As I mentioned, I find he sounds a lot like Ihsahn now with his harsh vocals, it's almost like he's trying to stop making them sound so harsh and add a bit of melody in it.

I absolutely love the new album, for me it easily tops the debut. Can't wait to get my hands on the real thing as soon as possible, especially to read the lyrics. As a hobby historian I especially enjoy the era that The Varangian Way is covering, and I read anything I can find on Constantinople and things that went on around there. That might have something to do with my enthusiasm for the album, but also musically, for me it's perfect.
Some might argue that it's less aggressive and slower than Battle Metal, which I guess it is. Some parts of the Varangian Way sound almost...operatic? That's right up my alley musically speaking, so... I have to say that for me at least, it tops Battle Metal in every way - an achievement that I didn't think was possible, and something that made me register here to say (haven't bothered to do so since the switch from Trolleve :)).

So here's a beer to hopefully seeing you play live next month in Finland! :kickass:

Either way both bands are fucking amazing.

I dont know why everyone is complaining about a more intense growl??? Seems to me that that would fit the story as Nygard would have intended. I was under the impression that nothing by turisas was an accident and everything had a purpose. Of course I havnt heard the new album yet, since I am not one to download things, but from what I have heard on the medley it sounds way better than battle metal.
