US election

watching the 7:30 Report & SBS News last night and they both made an interesting point that although Obama won the White House and has a good relation with and attitude to Australia, the congressional and senatorial seats were won and are still occupied by 'economic isolationalist' who would rather shut down imports to America and force strong pro-American trade agreements with countries such as us than risk USA jobs and manufacturing by importing.

So, many pundents here says that it may take a bit longer for our economy to recover despite what happens in the USA.

'twas an excellent speech. It showed all the more starkly how poor Dubya is in that respect. And every other.

The truth about Sarah Palin is starting to come out from the McCain camp. She is said to have had trouble understanding that Africa is a continent and that South Africa is just one of the countries there, and couldn't name the countries in the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Pretty silly? I'd say it's a stupid, completely baseless and entirely irrelevant thing to form an opinion from.

He also isn't named after a terrorist, for fucks sake.

Sarah Silverman said it best. "Barack" means lightning, and who wouldn't rather have a president named after lightning than a president named after a toilet, or someone who screws hookers?

Terrorist (plural terrorists)

1. One who governs by terrorism or intimidation; originally applied to an agent or partisan of the revolutionary tribunal during the Reign of Terror in France.
2. Anyone who uses terror as a weapon in a political struggle, frequently in an attempt to coerce a more powerful opponent, such as a government.

I am sorry but somewhere around the start of the Iraqi war, this is what Dubya became IMO and many others, sure getting a dog he unleashed off the leash is one thing, but look what he has done to that part of the world under the guise of protecting a threat that wasn't real anyway

Sarah Palin is a Christian fundamentalist who thinks the entire universe was made by God in 6 24-hour days, 6500 years ago. That would have been enough of a reason for me not to vote Republican.

Don't forget the fact that she though Africa was a country, not a continent!

In history, her appointment as running mate will go down as the winner for "biggest fuckup ever"

It was a very strange appointment. Sure some redneck "hockey moms" got excited by it, but anyone with half a brain could see right through her. If the Republicans had got up and McCain had died of old age, she would have been in line to take over the presidency!

I didn't know Barack meant lightning - that makes it an even better name!

McCain chose her himself; he was pretty moderate, even at odds with the rest of the Republicans about a lot of things. Perhaps he chose Palin to show them that he could in fact work with the significantly more right-leaning GOP. Apparently she was seen to be rather most centrist as Governor though. It's amazing how a sniff of real power can bring out someone's real pesonality.

Gore's pretty right there.

He did chose Palin because she trod the party line more than him and would bring more the centre-right voters along.

He also thought that she being from such a grass-roots level of the party (starting off as mayor) that she would be free of the taint and stigma of the already national serving party members.

On paper, she looked impressive and was dyed-in-the-wool Republican.
Then she went so nuts and inspired all the ultra-conversatives and isolated the people whom McCain actually wanted to attract.
