Using a electronic drum kit with real cymbals...

Well our drummer just bought a Alesis electronic drum kit with the dm5 and i was wondering would there be to much latency to use that to record the kick/snare and toms and then use his real cymbals?

Has anyone tried or done this?

Did you have any trouble with editing/mixing?

Nick Barker, for all intents and purposes. On PEM, he Used Roland kick and snare pads, and had his toms taped and muted to all hell.

Also, I have used that method quite a few times in the past and worked perfectly fine. I used an Edirol UM-1ex MIDI->USB adapter plugged into my PowerBook and got zero (or damn near) latency with a Hart Prodigy e-kit and Alesis DM-5 module. Recorded the MIDI and used it with DFHS, recorded the real cymbals at the same time. Came out nicely each time. Wish I had clips of those projects but they are long gone

I used the Edirol adapter because at the time I did not have an interface with MIDI i/o, only mic pres.

Wouldn't it work to put a mic on the pad once to record the stick hit together with the trigger signal, to see and measure the latency?
Then you could adjust the tracks afterwards.
