Eww, how dare you insult the Rectifier by saying Nihility sounds like it That album's tone is wretched IMO, and is also a mic'ed up Line 6 (Flextone I think). Now "Organic Hallucinosis" and especially "The Negation," on the other hand...

I remember reading somewhere (could have been here even ) that Vogg's tone is ENTIRELY in his fingers - in that live he doesnt even tour with a head and instead uses others' - yet always still manages to sound like Vogg!

Well no tone is entirely in the fingers - I'm sorry, but a power chord is a freakin' power chord; however, I agree he's one of the greatest (and tightest) guitarists I've ever heard!

It's interesting how your playing gives the ilusion of a different tone. I'm sure it affects the tone a lot to start with, but also I think alot of it has to do with psychological factors. If 2 guitar players play through the exact same settings, but one plays sloppily and makes a lot of weird noises while the other plays perfectly clean, I think those two would come across as entirely different sounds... or that's what I'm thinking atleast. It's quite easy to test it though but still, I think a part of that "in the fingers" is actually in the head of the listener as well.

I watched him playing very close, he used my exact rig, because he doesn`t carry anything and he only demand a good head (i think he ask for marshall or dual Recto) so he used my sansamp with the preset i use because he liked it, and let me tell you that about 70% or more is in his hands, both of them, he is TIGHT! his palm mute is amazing, his guitar was noisy as hell but he handled that very well, his soloing is more than great too, amazing player he got my entire respect.

Yeah, alot of the tone comes from how hard you pick, in what angle you hold the pick, the type of pick etc.
A hard precise picker can make even a mushy tone sound very good.

And Vogg is just fucking good at that.

Vogg's playing sounds the same through ANY amp. Hands down.

I've seen them live SO many times. He ALWAYS sounds the same.

-Ashdown angel and pre500 rectifier (since the beast)

-Recto and 5150 (The negation)
-Recto, 5150 for sure and I think a little bit of line6 vettaII for O.H

100% sure for Vader

i agree that alot is in the players picking and fretting technique. give me a ts and a high gain tube amp, and i can dial in a very similar sound.

Martin spoke about a 5150 a couple of time but I can't if he spoke about live or not...
