hes good at both obviously, but i think if you compared his cleans to most of the other clean singers in metal, and his growls to most of the growlers in metal, he wins by a longshot in the clean department. so...clean it is.

Listening to Mikael's death vocals is like eating well-prepared spicy food - sure there's a bite, and sometimes it even hurts a little, but it tastes so good.

But you can't just eat spicy stuff nonstop. You have to cool off. So you take a nice long sip of cool beer. Those are the clean vocals.

The best Opeth songs are the ones that balance this mixture correctly, that is to say evenly. So, to bring this analogy to a close, no I cannot chose between the two. Both are part of what make Opeth great.

Clean. Although years back that of course wouldn't have been the case. Mike has definitely been honing his clean singing skills throughout the years, whereas the death vocals have always felt like 'more of the same'.

If there was just growling, it wouldn't be Opeth.
If there was no growling, it wouldn't be Opeth.

We need both. Both kinds makes the growling sound so much more aggressive when he switches.

Yep, Moony summed it right up. Mike's death vocals are by far the best I've ever heard, though his clean voice is fucking beautiful and I'd probably take it over the screaming nowadays, they're pretty even. But yeah, Mike's clean voice just gets better and better, theres no doubt about it.

this one is tough. his death vox are like nothing that i have ever heard, and his clean vocals, though not such an extreme difference, are the same. so, i'll go with his growls, thanks to ghost reveries, which imo is his best performance. the "howls" at the beginning of GoP are the difference maker.

Love that analogy. Mikael's articulation and singing both clean and death, are one of the reasons why I love Opeth...
