man obviously if there was a both option up there everyone would choose it but for the sake of the poll i choose only one i would like to see the results for i want to know what background most of opeths fans have. good thread.

hes good at both obviously, but i think if you compared his cleans to most of the other clean singers in metal, and his growls to most of the growlers in metal, he wins by a longshot in the clean department. so...clean it is.

I completely disagree with you.

His death vox are just as comparable to other death vox as his clean vox are comparable to other clean vox.

Both are obviously amazing, however I prefer his death.

Clean. Although years back that of course wouldn't have been the case. Mike has definitely been honing his clean singing skills throughout the years, whereas the death vocals have always felt like 'more of the same'.

then you really just havent heard enough. theres plenty of competent growlers out there...but not nearly enough clean vocalists with talent. pure facts and statistics here, so good luck with all that.

Definitely not deepest or even best articulated for that matter, but they are quite well articulated, and I just hapen to like the way they sound better than most other growlers.

It's actually an opinion, I've heard a fuckload of death metal. Show me all the stats you want, my opinion won't change.

I like both of Mike's vocal styles, obviously, and as said I think both are needed.


Though I think I'd go with the death vocals. Songs like "Blackwater Park" do more to sway me than songs like "Windowpane". I think, for the most part, the death vocals fit slightly better than the clean, though the parts with clean are incredible as well.


Tough choice though, and it usually varies depending on my mood.

Mikael's vocals in singing.. are gorgeous...

However... the growls are absolutely amazing as well

Death growls. I don't even like cleaning singing that much anymore, unless it's a prog metal band. I still like Mike's singing, though. (And Dan Swanö's, of course.)
