volume automation with or without master limiter

do you guys have your master limiter/comps on or off when you do volume automation on separate tracks? i've been doing them with the limiter on so i get a real picture of how it sounds. i turned the limiter off and noticed the volume changes are more drastic. so id assume you'd automate with your master limiter on for better accuracy.

I do it with the limiter on, but I mix through my "mastering" chain.

Mix into a comp, usually. light character comp.
