Waterfield?

For some reason I have to think of something like 'Akerfeldt & Mr.V proudly present: Waterclime (Damnation part II)' when reading your post. Whatever... ;)

No, not quite what I was expecting, I don't think that Damnation was really "progressive" at all, it was just a mellow rock album, with mellotrons, which Id say is much closer to psychedelia.

For this, Im hoping something much more demanding of the listener, something that's gonna sound very full with a lot more instrumentation than Damnation had. Where Damnation mirrored something like Ragnarok (the swedish prog/folk band), Im hoping Waterclime will be more in the vain of bands like symphonic King Crimson (ex: the debut album).

I hope you're not trying to say that Damnation was a bad record. ;)

But I agree with you on the matter of the musical direction Waterclime will hopefully take.

No no, Damnation was very good indeed. But I just hope that there will be more instrumentation/experimentation in Waterclime. See, to me albums like Damnation feel like they are written as singer/songwriter albums, I mean Mike's voice and his guitar is the true structure of the songs, with the other members maybe doing solos/setting rhythms which is cool, but the most interesting of these types of albums is when the songwriter knows how to play multiple instruments and adds much more to his own music as for instance Steven Wilson does in his music. I just feel that maybe Mike wouldn't be comfortable with the other Opeth guys experimenting on "his" songs, while if he did it himself, it would have been a little more broad of an album. But I really do enjoy the album nonetheless, it's of extremely excellent quality for a mellow emotional rock album. But again, just hoping Vintersorg will sort of spread out his music on Waterclime and create something truly original while maintaining the original intentions of the project.

Well, the diversity of Mike's songwriting was demonstrated on Ghost Reveries once again. I don't think that Mike limitates Opeth because he claims the songwriting as his domain. He is really capable of doing things in a refreshing way instead of repeating himself. But I perfectly understand what you're saying about Damnation. It is indeed kind of a monotonous record, meaning that there's not much variation in the atmosphere (except for the brillant live version of 'Closure') - yet it is perfectly well done (just had to add that ;) ). I too hope that Waterclime will be more diverse. But then again, there is Mr.V as single composer, as Mike was on Damnation. I wouldn't say that the burden of composing if rested on one person's shoulders is too heavy to get some variation into the whole thing. It's more a question of how much diversity you really WANT to have in there.

About Waterclime... we'll know in some weeks. ;)

Waterclime? No offense Mr. V, but I kinda think Waterfield sounds better. No matter I guess, cant wait to get my hands on it anyway.

Yes, definitely, just the point I was trying to make was that Mr. V doesn't have a whole band that came on this to record the other parts, for example, he played all guitars, and he did all the keyboards and bass guitars etc, leaving HIM room to experiment (and being comfortable with that) rather than insecurely trusting other musicians to experiment on it.

But yes, in weeks we shall certainly know. Waterfield does sound infinitely better, but that's probably already taken, or rather to me it reminds me a lot of Blackfield.

Waterfield was the first thing that came to my mind..but after having deep dialogues with my self I cam to the conclusion that it was kind of lame..don't get me wrong here..it felt not unique and fresh in several aspects..and as I feel that the music is unique in a way I decided to get a more abstract approach with the whole name and images issue...that's the change. I like Waterfield as well...but somehow it sounds like a brittish soccer team in the lower divisions..hehehehehehehhahahahahaha..

I'm cold. This project sounds quinte interesting, indeed. Loving the 70s prog, I am, so a twist on the sound by some Swedish bloke named Vintersorg would most definitely go down well..

One thing I wonder; is it a concept?

man, this thread has made me start itching for this release more than ever!

Mr. V, I don't think the name thing is a deal at all, it simply doesn't matter what the name of anything is, as long as it's good music. Some of my favorite bands have the worst band names ever in my opinion.

Any way you could give us some more insight into what this album consists of without giving anything away? Use a lot of string mellotrons on this one? How about vocals, how did they turn out? Anything interesting about the recording sessions? I read that you had done this album recording song by song, sounds interesting, because it's just so hard to keep working on one song without giving yourself the space to get away from it and work on something else, right? Did you do the drums?

A telephone ringing in the morning screws my day. I don't want to join the phone list. ;)
