What do you think of Cynic's Focus?

I've owned this album for over 2 years now and I can't believe it still sounds as fresh as it did when I first heard it. I just love this album. It is IMO one of the best prog metal releases of all times, too bad it is so underrated.

Any opinions?

Pure Brilliance.

The vocoder vox get a little on my nerves at times, but my god was that one hell of a band.

Textures and Uroboric Forms are two of the most... brilliant... peices of music i have ever heard.
 
It never seemed that special to me. I've listened to a bunch of it more than once because people keep saying how great it is, but just can't get it.
 
That's fair enough Hondo, it's probably not for everyone.

...But can you seriously say that the song "Textures" isn't something special?

Yeah I heard that Cd when it was first released back in 1993, and I was REALLY impressed with it, and I still am to this day.

The only downfall it has is the damn production; it just sounds muffled and flat, you know that classic Scott Burns sound which I'm not very fond of to be completely honest with you all here.

Don't get me wrong Scott Burns is a great producer, I'm just not personally into the production jobs that he did with the majority of the bands that he handled. Yes there good, but like I said most of'em sound muffled and lack that crispiness, as if the microphones have several rags over them or something.

Anyway, great band. Its just a shame that they split after that one studio effort. It would have been great hearing one last album from these guys, but it never happened, to bad really.

Yeah, there is something wrong in the production, i think he was trying to make it sound a little more dense than it is... the guitars aren't up top enough.

Have you heard the earlier demo's pacman? The ones just before focus are even better than what's on the album imho, i think the song is called Thinking Being or something, maybe a different one, and it's absolutely killer.

Yes I have actually.

I heard "uroboric forms" which was featured in the "At Deaths Door" compilation a long time ago, and yes I think the production job on that one is much better, especially the drums, they sound more "round" and have that sort of "echo" to them which I like, and the guitars sound good aswell, more "crisp" than on there focus album.

I heard some of there demo material aswell, and it sounds good, at least as far as I can remember, but I can't really elaborate on them, since I only heard them once, and it was I while back through some site on the net, but I believe it was " eagle nature" and some other one.

Now only if I could get my hands on some of there live performance; that would be nice.;)

The demo of Uroboric Forms is 200% better than the one on focus... there is less vocoder vox, plus the production is awesome on that, such thick guitars.

Yeah, the demo had Uroboric forms, Eagle Nature and Pleading For Preservation on it...

There's one demo before that that's heaps good too, extra songs that should have been on focus but weren't... any of the earlier demos are a bit crappy tho, like really old death demos :lol:

Yep, thats where I heard those demos, it was from the site that you linked, this was like three years ago, around.

Well I will definitely check it again, and take a nice look at those live performance clips that they have on there;)

Oh yes did I mention? I saw Cynic play in concert back in 1994 at Berkely Square in California. Excellent show thats all I could say.
