What happens to old forums?

So i've noticed some forums for some bands get shut down.... I'm just wondering why, and what bands besides like Opeth and Katatonia?

Opeth was caused by a snowball of trouble making users ending with the insult of a band member from another band that has passed away (friend of Mikael's) - after which he requested the forum be closed (hopefully to come back one day...).

Katatonia I think went the way of Facebook, etc. - which I don't agree with but what can I do. I may open it back up as an unofficial channel in the near future.

All closed forums remains in the lower area of the site under unofficial/archived forums.
