What is metalcore?

Metalcore is a combination of old school thrash inspired metal and hardcore punk - typical bands of the genre include Hatebreed, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage & God Forbid.

"metal core" is a word used by emo kids that tack "core" or "emo" onto any kind of music. it is their way of staying "punk" throughout the day.
"screamo"
"Metal core"
"grindcore"
"emo"
apple core.....fuckingsucky-o, whatever....

I wasn't all that impressed with Hatebreed, but Shadows Fall is pretty good.

How about Three Inches of Blood, though? Holy shit, that's a kickass band!

In my badass opinion, the record that best exemplifies metalcore is Gomorrah's Season Ends, by Earth Crisis - a staggeringly awesome CD!

Hatebreed aren't metalcore, they are just hardcore.

Anyway, metalcore is practically just hardcore with solo's, so a lot of so called metalcore bands are not metal, though some of them actually are metal, like Deadsoil, who have a melodic death song structure, though usually people think if it's hard and heavy it's metal, such as grindcore.

Darkest Hour is a good example of the genre. An incredible band as well. Also, check out Burnt By the Sun's 2003 release, Perfect is the Enemy of Good. Out on Relapse. Oh, and Atreyu is absolutely worthless.

I went to see In Flames when they opened for Earth Crisis. A good chunk of the crowd were beer-drinking smokers with leather jackets. Another good chunk of the crowd were vegans wearing DARE shirts with big-ass X's on their hands.

If Hatebreed and Darkest Hour are part of this group than two other great bands are Devildriver and Mastodon. Basically, I'm getting that anyone new is another species of the metal taxonomy but personally IMO it's getting to the point of lumping them all together i.e. Winger with Anthrax. Metal is coming back to more familiar territory, for me personally, and they're branching finally.
