so umm your experience with marduk is based on what? one songs from "la grande danse macabre"? after "dark endless", the debut, marduk was pretty much always one of the most well known "hyperspeed" bm bands, eventually descending into self-parody with "panzer division marduk", but lots of the previous albums like "opus nocturne" and "nightwing" were comprised of nearly constant high speed riffage and/or blasting, although back then they had some sort of quality

Opus Nocturne really isn't that fast E, neither is Heaven Shall Burn...

After that, well, yeah.

Their last 3 albums weren't all blast blast blast blast either.

no you're wrong

the correct and only definition of norsecore is stuff like dark funeral and marduk (especially panzer division m.), where most traditional values of black metal have been dumbed down & replaced with simplistic lyrics focusing on comic book style "satanism", hate and such, and where the music focuses on being fast and "brutal" to levels almost approaching grindcore -- hence the name

Ca you tell me where you found that definition? I'm curious, since I never heard of that before. But the Ildjarn music being called Norsecore, I've seen a few times. Besides, bands playing fast BM is something not new at all, and it's always been very common in BM circle.

What kind of "values" are taken away when a band plays fast BM? I understand that Marduk and DF are jokes nowadays but Panzer Division Marduk is killer. It's and ode to War, Destruction, Chaos, which fits BM perfectly. I'm not a huge fan of Marduk, actualy I only like Opus Nocturne, which I have since it came out, and PDM, that is the ultimate brutal BM album IMO.

I also really like PDM, in fact I will listen to it right after this here WASP rokkinness. I pretty much agree with Erik's definition about norsecore, but I think the term was coined by Opyros of NEP and, not to put words into his mouth, but I think that he lumps together pretty much all "modern" (post-91-ish sound) black metal there... The part that isn't faggoth, at least. And I should keep my mouth shut about stuff I don't really know much about. oh well, POST.

Dark Funeral are black metal but their lyrics are indeed simple. I would rank them as black metal though. Which band is pure black metal then?

oh dear god, not this again.

pure black metal is subjective. or rather, i should say, what isnt pure black metal is subjective. you can look at it from a lyrical standpoint, or a musical standpoint. then you have to look and see if the band has evolved at all, cuz if they have then they arent trve :err: .

so some say a band isnt true black metal form having simple lyrics, that just sounds stupid. but thats my. but then again lyrics are low on my list of musical priorities. if you ask me, which you didnt, true black metal is about the passion or feeling in the music. there is a certain atmosphere in black metal, i think we can all agree on that, and i think it can be achieved in a variety of ways. terible production and vocals that sound like a dog being raped (varg anyone?) isnt the only way to create black metal atmosphere.

..oh, i happen to like burzum

I remember being in some store and hearing a little kid screaming at the top of his lungs for the longest time and he sounded exactly like Varg. I kept trying to find the kid, but no luck.

All I know about Marduk is that Those of The Unlight and Opus Nocturne are fucking class albums, and not at all mindless blasting. It's well composed stuff.

I've never even listened to newer Marduk.[/12 posts too late]
