What's your favorite band besides Iron Maiden?

Yeah I met Jon a few times. I've met all of them actually. Not that that really means anything. Chris Squire can really drink! I met Jon once on acid a long time ago. That was a trip. We didn't actually talk, he just bowed to me and I did it back.

Metallica and Iron Maiden are my two favourites. Iron Maiden just slightly behind Metallica. I've seen Metallica 13 times in 8 different countries with another three shows in August.

I am pretty sure I saw one fo the greatest Metalica shows in recent history. Why? Well check this out:
I live in San Francisco, and they live around here. About 4 years ago, before they went on tour that wanted to warm up. They played here at a theatre called The Filmore, which is standing room only that fits about 1000 people. It was 3 days of free shows for invited guests only and special fan club member lottery or soemthing. I was not invited nor was I a fan club member. I showed up and met some dude, and we started talking. After everyone went in they had room for a few more "Fan Club members" There guy told her I was his cousin and she let me in.
The show began with Hit the lights and they played almost the entire Garage Days. The focus of the show was almost entirely Justice and before. All old stuff! Out of the entire long show, they only new songs were Sad but True and 2 others of that new album. So only 3 or 4 Post-Justice songs. Awesome show! My ears rang like a jet plane for about 2 weeks. I truly thought I went deaf.
So, having said that, I do like them, but don't really find them interesting enough to listen to often nor do I find them as melodic and sophisticated as Maiden. As much as you know Maiden, I am surprised that they fall second to Metallica, especially since they haven't put out a good album in years. Lke Rush. Rush has completely forgotten how to write songs since Moving Pictures, besides a few songs here and there.

Metallica was the first metal band I ever really liked, so that is one of the reasons why they hold a special place in my heart. I've been a fan for about 17 years now, which is not bad considering I'm only 23. I like it how they do not always play it safe and experiment with different styles. I love all Metallica's albums (even St Anger). I have been called "a fucked up Metallica fan" for telling someone that I like Load more than Master Of Puppets? It pisses me off that people judge me because I don't think that the be all and end all of the band lies within the first four albums. Everyone has different tastes and people are welcome to their opinions but when they try to tell me what I should and shouldn't like, that really pisses me off. If you don't like the band, fine! If you don't like any of their new stuff, that's fine too but do not try and tell me that I am wrong for liking it just because you don't!! (sorry, this rant is not aimed at you - just venting!! )
I know a few people that went to the Fillmore shows (lucky bastards!) and, just to be picky, there were four shows not three (18th - 22nd of May 2003).

I'm just a Metallica geek. I laughed when you typed out that whole explanation of the Fillmore shows cos I knew all about it but didn't want to say "Yeah, I knew that!"
I don't think there is any way you can explain why you like a song. I am a lover of all styles of music so I guess my very open mind helps. One song I adore is Mama Said. I love country music (Garth Brooks is a favourite of mine at the moment) so that helps but I also love the sheer emotion in James' voice. I think if the album was from a new band, it would have been very well receieved but because it was Metallica, people didn't like it. Same with Maiden and No Prayer/FOTD, Megadeth with Risk etc etc. People don't seem to like change. You don't like it, that's cool - not everyone can understand why people like certain music.
Like I don't understand how people can go to raves and listen to BOOM BOOM BOOM for hours but they probably think the same about us and metal shows!! Thats a good explanation.
I'm more into progressive rock, and think of Maiden as such. Kind of prog metal I guess. Metallica reminds me of high school which is cool, but they tend to come off to me as American white trash, where Iron Maiden comes off to me as British intellectual music. Metallica reminds me of the late 80s and early 90s when it was cool to have a comb in the back pocket and wear Metal Up Your Ass Shirts and smoke lots of crappy mexican buds and be like "Woah Fade to Black is so cool, man!"
I like Dio a lot. My favorite Sabbath album is Heaven and Hell. Besides Dio, Metallica and Maiden, I don't think there is any Metal band I really like. So I guess I'm not a real hesher. I kind of like Queensryche and Dream Theatre and some others, but not enough to really care about. I just love fuckin Iron Maiden! A total anomaly in my book! They transcend any genre.

They evolved and changed. You may not like how they changed but their songwriting never diminished. Their sound can change dramatically CD to CD though.
Such as Test for Echo
, Vapor Trails., then Snakes and Arrows.They have stripped back to just guitar, bass and drums and ditched much of the keyboard stuff.

How can you go from Hemispheres to Vapor Trails and not see a degradation in songwriting? If you like Vapor Trails than that is great. That is your opinion and who can argue with that. But if you judge from a musical perspective, nothing has come from them that is epic since Moving Pictures which was a long time ago. Look at Natural Science, and then whats coming out now. I don't get what happened. I like Snakes and Arrows, I just don't love it. They have the ability to blow you away, I don't see why they can't just busy out every once in a while and blow you away. Its frustrating.

The band, Yes, for instance, their last album a few years ago, had some ttoally epic mind blowing songs on it. It may not be as good as the 70s stuff, but they are still trying to blow you away, and they do!

i have all of jeff beck's stuff - some live bootlegs too. his tone is amazing it's cool live how he can nail the whammy bar melodies - i seen him only once in the ealy 90z with SRV who is another big influence for me - two guitar heros in one night

I don't mind a bit of Dream Theater now and then but on the whole I just don't like it!! Hehehe!

Different strokes I guess. I do not judge a band solely on the amount of "epic" songs they write. Sure Permanent Waves was really the end of the Rush "epics" with Natural Science. However the quality of Neils lyrics, aka poetry, has never degraded just evolved.
You know between Test for Echo and Vapor Trails Neil's wife and daughter both died and Rush would have ended if Neil didn't want to continue.
Artist output will evolve and change as they evolve and change as people. I've listened to Rush for about 30 years so I may have a different perspective.
Alex is still one of the absolute best rhythm guitar players around and Geddy is just as phenomenal as ever. Neil plays more intricate and unique rhythms as opposed to the bombastic stuff in his youth.
Vapor Trails has some great songs in a horrible recording. The engineers who recorded that should be beaten.

Jeff Beck is better now than he was in the 90s. Its weird to say this, but its true. He has actually taken the guitar to a completly new level now. I saw him at LA House of Blues about a year ago. Even when he does the Blow By Blow stuff its way beyond what he was doing then. Its like from another universe now.
There are very few "guitar gods" that I think keep progressing like Jeff Beck. Most get stagnant. Jeff Beck gets the Acujer sign of approval!
