But I suspected all along the scheduling might conflict. Kept hoping though. Oh, as for "next time they play", Aki's informed me a gig with Machine Men and a few other bands in January at a ski resort. Anyone up for skiing/boarding in Lapland? Daylight is highly over-rated btw in comparison to good metal and good snow.

Predominantly power? I asked a few people to help me classify all the bands last year and this is what we came up with... agree or disagree, hardly "predominately power metal"...

Evergrey - Progressive/Power Metal
Jorn - Hard Rock/Heavy Metal
Epica - Symphonic Gothic Metal
Mercenary - Melodic Death Metal
Freak Kitchen - Odd Prog Metal
Thunderstone - Melodic Heavy Metal (not quite PC69, not quite Rhapsody)
Savage Circus - Power Metal
Pyramaze - Power Metal
Vision Divine - Progressive/Power Metal
ZH - Progressive Metal

Now... personally... Power metal to me is fast, lots of double bass, Gamma Ray, Rhapsody, Stratovarius, etc... I don't personally hear that in Pyramaze, but everyone i talked to said definitely power metal. The only "true" power metal band last year IMO was Savage Circus.

Just my opinion.

i think id have to generally agree with you, longshot. i wouldnt consider pyramaze to be predominatly "power metal", at least not the point where they are in the same so called category as rhapsody and savage circus.

Thunderstone is definitely power metal though.

Still, PPVII was most definitely not top heavy with power. As a matter of fact, my main beef with the lineup was that three of the top four bands were neither progressive nor power metal.

Its all a matter of preference. IMO theres nothing appealing to my ears when a guy (or girl) growls and grunts into a microphone. If its used as an added effect I dont mind it, but when its the key ingredient for a bands melodies (if you can call em that) and songs, than I have no interest.

No... you can't call them that. That's just the point. If you are looking for soaring melodies in harsh vocals, they're just not going to be there. Harsh vocals are not the key ingredient for a band's melodies. I can see why you'd be used to thinking of vocals as a "lead" instrument, but the whole idea of harsh vocals is to use the vocals as more of a "rhythm" instrument, while leaving the "lead" melodies in that song (or that section of a song) to other instruments, like guitars or keyboards, or even another vocalist.

dude, man, if you don't like harsh vocals or you think they are bad or don't fit...listen to kalmah. i was a straightforward powermetal guy before and had the same small view on these type of vocals, but give it a chance, listen to it more. youll find something, most likely. if i ever expected or knew i was gonna find and love bands like kalmah, ensiferum, and finntroll...i never wouldve made any negative comments towards harsh vocals, which i really regret.
