AngraRULES said:I have to vehemently disagree with you there. You don't need to appreciate talent in order to recognize it. I don't like Christina Aguilera, but I am aware she has lots of talent.
That being said, whoever thinks somebody like Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth has no talent in his singing/growling, has to be out of their mind.
It's one thing to not like it, and another to say it doesn't have any talent. I suggest you look into the differences in these two.

Cut me some slack. I've tried, very hard, to get into bands that use death vocals. I really, really, wanted to like Children of Bodom, In Flames, Sentenced and Mercenary. I did end up liking Orphaned Land and I LOVE one Mercenary song, 11 Dreams(although strangely nothing else).
I just don't see what death vocals add to a song that clean singing couldn't convey just as well.
As for what an oddball is, it used to be we knew right away who the oddball was. In the last two Progpowers we couldn't agree. Everyone thought Orphaned Land was a perfect oddball, but then Glenn says it's PC69. Last year we had Mercenary(who was the PPIV oddball), but the real oddball was Freak Kitchen.
I'm thinking that death vocals are now standard and anything that is more rock than metal is now oddball. Which means either we're getting a good hard rock band this year or two or three death vox bands.

There is a difference between knowing someone has talent and thinking that a certain aspect of their performance doesn't take any talent to pull off. Mikael Akerfeldt, just to use your example, certainly has talent and I don't think anyone would deny that fact but, saying that his growling doesn't require talent to perform, is completely different than saying he has no talent. His songwriting skills and his normal singing voice, which is fantastic by the way, is proof of his talent, but, again imo, growling/screaming requires no discernable talent, or skill, to perform.AngraRULES said:That being said, whoever thinks somebody like Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth has no talent in his singing/growling, has to be out of their mind.

Dude, I was with ya until you said MA has no talent.Ascension said:Ok...l think Mikael has no talent, out of my mind or not...does not appeal to me & never will. If it doesn't appeal to me...it's because l don't percieve talent...pure & simple. l'm black & white that way. Sure...it's an opinion and l'm very fond of mine.
Christina on the other hand appeals to me greatly...she's hot, but that's a whole other kinda talent...nuff said.![]()
