Without a doubt - Godheads Lament, it has THE best acoustic section of any song I've ever heard. Its probably my second most preferred Opeth song, and thats a bit weird cos The Moor my favourite song by Opeth is on the same album right next to it!

To bid you farewell is the runner up.

Godhead's Lament, because of that gorgeous three note guitar harmony "Searching my way, to perplexion, AHhhhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

Exactly the same reason! A beautiful song.
And also the "what would they care..." bits, it sounds kind of mediaeval and folky, I think...
TBYF is a close 2nd though!

Jim, why are you asking? and why that particular selection of songs? (curious)

... these seem to be the least liked songs off of each album (well Dirge For November on BP but that would be too obvious of a not-pick-me) so I wanted to see what was the best of the underdog songs. :)

Well, fuck me.

I'm on my way.. just wait there...

I love Amen Corner and Funeral Portrait. Especially the clean vocal harmonies towards the end of the song.

But I would have to vote Godheads Lament. It was the first Opeth Song I had heard. From the start, those insane chords, the heaviness. Then five minutes later, it was quiet and accoustic.. It was thinking, IS THIS THE SAME BAND? And then the song finishes with a HUGE finale. I was ejaculating all over the place.

I had never heard a band like this before. Such an epic song, so many movements.

I went and bought Still Life the next day. That song is very special.

For me obviously To Bid You Farewell, for obvious reasons. This is actually one of the most loved songs by Opeth fans, definitely not the least liked track off Morningrise, I think that's Nectar, however that track is still phenomenal, as is the whole Morningrise album of course...

It would have been TBYF a few months ago, likely. But I'm just constantly reminded of how amazing Godhead's Lament is. The acoustic part just haunts you, and the ending kicks ass, with that trashy cymbal.. :muahaha:

mm.. but they're all good songs!

If I worked less than 70 hours a week, I'd have a chance to check the forum instead of just sleeping when I'm home.. :(

MAYH the most difficult to get into?
How can you say that when clearly on the "your favorite Opeth albums" lists from this very board, 'Orchid' is the one that the majority of peaple stick at the bottom...?

I guess it all depends on what time one comed on this board and to which poll thread one reads. To me, it always seems that most Opeth fans on this site leave MAYH at the bottom of which is Opeth's best cd because it is "too heavy" or "too difficult to understand" ~ I still think it is their very best because the music is so well written and it is also their most complex cd to date.

Hmm, interesting, To Bid You Farewell and Godhead's Lament are getting nearly all the votes and titles like The Amen Corner and Funeral Portrait are getting nothing but a few. Requiem, even though it's damn beautiful, is clearly considered more of an interlude than a whole song.

Well, I'm not helping those no-vote-getters. They aren't profilic enough compared to To Bid You Farewell and especially to Godhead's Lament, which got my vote. ;)

It was tough choice between TBYF, and Godheads Lamnet but..

TBYF has a personal meaning to me, that no other song can touch, Every lyric of that song was something I experienced, and when I first heard that song, I was alone listening to morningrise on the bus, and I couldnt help but cry...The first time music made me feel that..."Why can't you see? that I try, when ever tear I shed is for you.." damn that still gets me..so yeh TBYF its is.
