who else gets their music from....

They rate everything 9/10. I find them to be very inconsistent and biased. It doesn't bode well that different reviewers give such drastically different scores to the same album. I have seen albums get a perfect 10 from one reviewer and a 5 or 6 from others. Does not seem very professional.

That is called variety of opinions my friend, get used to it, its everywhere and really unavoidable!

heh.

err....look.....usually I check for bands where the ratings are generally the same. Good example is agalloch. Nothing below a 9. Generally, bands that range from 3-10 depends more on personal taste. But with agalloch for instance, personal opinion doesn't matter cause agalloch is a great band regardless.

I am starting to really dislike The Metal Observer because they are so terrible at reviewing Brutal death metal. Every review is just "they play well but can't write a song". I understand this opinion, but it doesn't help anyone who might actually like the style. I don't go around saying all power metal is boring and poorly written because I dislike the style of power metal. The worst review they have is of Disgorge - She Lay Gutted.

First off, despite this guys repeated assertions, DISGORGE IS NOT GRINDCORE! Not even close. He also mentions Gorgasm as a grindcore band. He obviously knows nothing about this style and has no business reviewing it.

Sorry about that, I had to vent.

I understand that, it's just hard to take alot of the reviews seriously when they vary so much. I think a lot of personal bias slips in to the reviews. Of course it is impossible to review something without bias but there is a point were you need to step back and look at the record as a piece of art and review it a little more subjectively.

It would be different if all they were all user reviews, but they are not. I expect a certain degree of professionalism.

That review made me laugh, but I have the same complaints you do. If I could change one common error many people make about DM, it would be differentiating it from grindcore.

Ha, Gabe was one of the most biased opinionated reviewers on the site. And he was a death metal fan too actually However when he trashes/praises something he goes all the way Funny guy:p

I used to check out Metal Observer years back. It's a good site to start out at, but later down the line, you need reviews by people with more specialised musical interpretation.

e.g. I hate seeing reviews done by people who don't know the music, the style, and the band. It's very annoying.

Nevertheless, for those just getting their feet wet, Metal Observer is okay.

Exactly Hubster. If someone who has never heard Black Metal before tries to write a review of a Black Metal album it will fail miserably. In fact, I have seen it. On metal archives no less.

I am struggling to remember the band and the album that was being reviewed but I do remember it was a fairly well known/popular run of the mill black metal band. Nothing too raw or kvlt I know that for sure. Anyway the reviewer went on to state that he does not beleive there is any other band out there that makes albums with this type of raw and staticy production yada yada yada. It was 100% obvious he had never heard another black metal album in his life.

My thoughts exactly
