Who else hates Harry Potter?

I don't hate it as much I -DON'T LIKE- most of it's fan base. When you read a Harry Potter book, you know that you're not going to get some kind of genre innovating idea, or anything mind blowing, you're going to get what you know you're going to get...which is a Harry Potter book. They are decent, and entertaining, but they are what they are. They are directed at a younger fan-base.
Just like the movies. I hate people who go and say "OH MAN THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO SUCK DICK OMG IM SO KEWL," because it's not supposed to be a mind-blowing, it's supposed to be a Harry Potter movie.

It's a relaxing thing to do. It's something that you don't have to think about and concentrate very hard on. It's like background music for the eyes and mind.

Exactly. People try to criticize for more than what it is. That's what pisses me off the most.
What gets to me the most personally is the exessive merchandising. Plus, that Daniel Radcliffe charachter is just nausea inducingly irritating.

For non-fiction, I recommend The World is Flat.
Masters of Doom for an entertaining quick read. It's the biography of the creators of the video game, Doom.
For fiction, take your pick. What kind of books do you like? I personally like Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, and of course, J.K. Rowling.
Of course, the cool elite will tell you read everything by Vonnegut, but Hunter S. Thompson will always be my favorite author.
Incorrect. It may have been intended for a young audience initially but Harry Potter books and films have long since transcended their childish categorisation. Today they are being marketted to a far wider audience, including adults, such as yourself for example.

Every now and then don't you like to listen to music that you liked long ago, usually it's not metal and may even be pop or hair metal, but you get that little feeling of nostalgia. It's kinda like that. Harry Potter gives you a break from the real world for a couple of hours with some shameless self-indulgence.

I konw what you're getting at, but Harry Potter never really did anything for me in the first place.
My dad got me 'The Hobbit' for my 10th birthday and back then I was (and still am) a huge Terry Pratchett fan so I when tried to read Harry Potter I felt like it was a cheap imitation of said authors.

I would say anything that gets kids to read (as opposed to MTV) is a good thing.
That being said, I much prefer LOTR to any such nonsense.

i never thought i'd like Harry Potter. However, I recently got into it. I like the books a lot better than the movies though.

Aye, same, eh. I could never really get into the series (tried the first book; wasnae happening), but I've no qualms wi' all those that have. They're reading more. Good stuff.

I find them pretty dull, especially given the back ground of writing in that genre. I'm more interested in them as a social phenomenon than anything else.
Also, why does it bother some people so much when a group of people get excited about something? The fact that the written word can stir up such fervour is heart warming. That some people can't stand other people being excited, joyous etc is pretty much a case of sand in the vagina - lighten up!
