Who wants their voice on DT's new album?

Well I don't know where all of this "right and wrong" argument came from (a couple pages back). I was very clear in my initial posts that what I was saying was my opinion, so I am not sure why everyone got so uptight about it. So if you like Dream Theater, then like Dream Theater. If U2's stuff all of the sudden sounds magical to you when DT plays it, then more power to you. However that being said, when someone critcizes DT maybe everyone shouldn't get so uptight about it. After all, they are just a band, aren't they? For being so sensitive about 'their band', DT fans sure are quick to thumb their noses at other bands, doesn't make much sense to me.

That comment stinks of prog snobbery... I think you've retained some of your former attitude... :p

Nah... i was never a progsnob and i think he's right. it's pretty interesting because that's usually how it works. i could do a whole long post on why more "extreme metal" is more mature in many ways than prog and ESPECIALLY power metal, especially because it seems to be a very natural progression (No pun intended). By that i mean, most every metal fan i know starts largely with more accessable forms of metal (prog, strangely and quite contrary to progsnob comments, is included here, as well as power and heavy). Over time, almost every metal fan (and i say almost, not all) gravitates towards something more extreme, be it thrash, black, death, or all. Though i'd like to point out nothing is defined. There's no formula, but i am jsut saying as a trend, it seems like something that happens.

Note: also, people who proclaim that they listen to either "intelligent music for intelligent people" or something similar listen almost exclusively to bands such as Dream Theater, Opeth, Pain of Salvation, etc. I'm not saying these bands can't be enjoyed later in your metal "career" (i still like opeth's earlier works for example) but the stuff that is more sophisticated in many respects (such as my current favorite: Agalloch) almost always follows once one pulls their own heads out of their asses and realizes that these bands they proclaim are so untouchable are indeed able to be surpassed. Also, at some point you stop feeling like you're better than everyone else because you listen to elite music. This is what truly separates a progsnob from the rest of us.

And it is true. Ask me or Kenneth (who i know shares similar musical tastes in some regard) as well as montu, tubbs, etc. etc. I doubt any of us would claim we are better than others due to the music we listen to. We claim we're better because we have an actual logical thought process that isn't driven by "THIS BAND IS THE BEST EVER BACAUSE THEY PLAY INSTRUMETNS GOOD!!!!11!"

Yeah, i realize this rant seems hypocritical... but you guys just don't get it. It's above you and you don't get it :p </typical progsnob fallback>

You're really starting to piss me off.

Sorry... :erk:

And progmetalpilgrim, this is NOT directed at you

I got no beef with you, just have to vent every now and then right?

Absolutely!!! :kickass:

For what it's worth fellas, I don't only like prog, and I do enjoy some of the more extreme stuff, but I just find that prog is what I enjoy listening to the most and enjoy playing the most. And I do enjoy great displays of fine musicianship (I also love classica and jazz) and this is a reflection in the types of music I listen to. Other stuff just can't hold my interest in the same way... I guess that's just the way I am, but i respect you guys who actually have good reasoning behind your opinions, its the mainstream sheep who just follow the trends that annoy me the most, even in metal...

I'm sorry, Death Metal just sounds like the band is beating the hell out of their instruments and the singer is attempting to cough up a lougie(sp?) to me.

Prog Rock/Metal is my favorite genre and that's unlikely to change.

I like some thrash, but that's about as "extreme" as I go.

Snobbery takes more than one form. No one here can say they are better than anyone else because we all judge each other on different points of personality and have our own opinions of what makes a person better than another.

I wasn't expecting any recognition/compensation at all. I wasn't providing some amazing service or skill. They could've taken any 50 of their fans to get the stuff they wanted. I just wanted to be on teh record, meet some of the DT members, and hear some of the new record. All 3 happened. Me is happy

very few on topic posts in here !!:Smug:

btw what the general aspect of the lyrics man , since u read and sang some...???
