ok, this debate started on another board, i figured this would be a good place to ask the question.

Well, I also think that it's Mercyful Fate. But it was more like "style" influence, imo. As for music, it's Bathory and Burzum, I think.

Imagewise, Venom and Mercyful Fate no doubt. Musically, Bathory.

Yeah I was thinking in those terms as well. All those bands have contributed something unique to black metal.

Bathory - Sound, Production, Vocals
Celtic Frost - Classical Influence
Venom - Satanic Themes
Mercyful Fate - Corpsepaint!!!

I don't know much about Hellhammer but whatever Celtic Frost contributed was probably similar, no?

And since the music counts the most, Bathory gets my vote.

btw, i also argued that musically bathory was more important. but to quote them:
I was into black metal back then, eagerly ripping the plastic off my copy of the just released Hellhammer album and following venom and all thing black. Bathory was a pimple on the butt of black metal back then

I wasn't around at the time of those bands and don't really know, so I voted Venom because I like them most.

=/ Fucking research!

I chose Bathory although everyone's arguments here are very valid. Bathory is simply the most musically similar to what it is we now percieve as "Black Metal" and so it makes the most sense to me.

<=== Dumbass.

I chose Celtic Frost under the pretense that while Bathory was overall more influential to the development of Black Metal, Celtic Frost also had a tremendous impact on the development of Death Metal as well. And then I remembered everything Quorthon did after Blood Fire Death. So yeah, I meant to vote for Bathory. I just have a habit of thinking in terms of the Black Metal era.

...

And now I read the actual question in the poll, which limits the discussion to Black Metal, so Bathory still should have gotten my vote.
