Bathory without a doubt; but I think early Destruction was also a big influence on Black Metal, even though they were a thrash band. I think Venom had a huge influence on Extreme metal in general.

Well it was Kiss (or Alice Cooper?) that did it originally, but Mercyful Fate fortified its evilness and inspired later BM.

Note: inspired later BM to wear corpsepaint, not necessarily to make BM music.

Not that I know shit about Mercyful Fate, but if that was their contribution to metal, then I'm not very impressed...

While it's true that they were largely inspired by Motorhead, it's always irked me when people reduce them to "basically Motorhead with Satanic lyrics" or "Motorhead with shit production" or "Motorhead without the talent" and shit like that, because they were a lot more than that.

I wouldn't say they had no talent, but Abbaddon was a really bad drummer, and the production on the first 3 albums pretty much sucked. I still like them though.

Where as I would say all three. Venom were fucking shit. I don't find any redeeming features in them at all.

No, it's because Venom are awful. Indeed, I voted for Hellhammer, (for the inability to play which seems prevalent in Black metal), but I should have considered for longer. Most black metal seems to draw deeply from the Venom well of being terribly produced, badly played, dreadfully written tosh.

Come on. What about the comedy aspect?

You got me there! Just where on earth do you find Studded Knee pads? (See Cronos)

I really don't know, perhaps a bit of DIY was in order. The same sort of DIY that had Mantas wearing spandex with a broken fly, but subtly concealed with a studded belt and held up with braces...

I can't take people who deny the excellence of songs like "Don't Burn The Witch" and "Buried Alive" seriously, so you must excuse me when I assume that you must listen to stuff like this.

Buried Alive is indeed a great song.

My bones are decayed, my flesh it doth rot
I'm lying in silk, take the lid off this box
My lungs gasp for air, my eyes scream for sight
I promise the rise of my body this night
Summon the dead..........
Baphomets call...........
Blood on my hands........
Screaming in torment.....
I'm felling you all......
Take heed of my plea.....
Answer my call...........
I'm gonna be free........
