Anyone who can provide a technical explanation to following would be appreciated?
I have two heads connected to one cab: One is a 6505 the other an old SS Laney. When the 6505 is on and i am playing through it and the LAney is switched off the LEDs in the LAney (power&channel) partially light up! And dim again when i stop playing.....Why is that?? Weird!

How's the cab configured? It could be that you're feeding your Laney with the 6505 output, like some cabs/monitors have input/throughput for serial cab connections. I'd disconnect the Laney anyway.

Yeah i disconnected because the set up was also affecting the sound of the 6505. I had forgotten they were both plugged into the one cab (i used the set up when a ex-bandmember/friend was visiting from UK a few months ago). The cab has two jack inputs on rear but differnet imp markings etc. I can buy the fact that somehow the 6505 signal is finding its way back to the Laney but i think its really weird that the LEDs on the Laney front panel light dimly. The Laney was plugged into the mains but not switched on...i will unplug it and see if it still happens....in the name of science....

The reason the leds are being lit up is because you are "backfeeding" the amp(Dont know if thats the correct term.).
Im pretty sure that you can kill both your amps that way. ;X

yeah I can name about 30 reasons for why that isn't good to do. My guess is that you are sending 'flyback' voltage to the PT on the Laney, which is essentialy powering it up, kinda sorta.

would the "flyback" be present when both amps are switched on?...or would everything be going in the same direction? (thinking on it: the 6505 output sounded affected yesterday when the both heads were plugged into the cab with Laney off...)

Yeah I don't understand why you had it setup this way in the first place...

I had this set up so that we could both play through the only cab i have. But i will not be doing this anymore: don't want to fuck my 6505!

what egan said...wire that shit up so that it's basically 2 separate 2x12's in a single enclosure and you'll be alright

Not good no matter what way you do it, you could unplug the Laney, have it off, and it will still do it.
You are creating a weird impedance mismatch and causing other problems on top of it.

Just wire the cab as stereo like everyone else has said, like having 2 2x12, one side for one amp, one side for the other.

On this same note, this is why I don't let people borrow my gear anymore. I let a buddy borrow my XXX and 4x12 a while back, and he had some crazy rigged up shit going on when I went to go pick it up. Had the amp set for 16 ohms, had a cable coming out of both out puts- one to my 16ohm 4x12 input, then a cable from the output on that cab to the input on his 8 ohm cab, and a cable from the out on that cab to the other output on my amp. I was furious, and he said he did it because that's what all the famous people do.

wolfy, that story is just ridiculous... and totally believable! i also do not loan my gear out for pretty much the same kind of shit. it blows the mind the stupidity people get up to. what's so hard about understanding impedance? i would have geeked on that dude.... he should count himself lucky it wasn't my gear he borrowed and did that to.

Man, I got a good one. In a previous band, my other guitar player and I were rehearsing. We were playing all day, so I always had the amp on. I had to split for about a half hour. When I came back, the other guitarist had taken the speaker cord out of my dual rec and plugged my cab up to his head. HE LEFT MY DUAL REC ON WITHOUT A LOAD! I came back in and the amp was FUCKED!!! It just crackled.

That is when you release your fists of fury.

Seriously, if someone did that with my gear, I would fist him so hard that he would scream for his mom!
