Why doesn´t Opeth Jam?

because "for absent friends" is not jazz, and that's the example he gives of "jazz" he likes. and real jazz he calls "improvised jazz wanking"

Still doesnt mean he knows nothing, probably little but he probably has to know something.

This is the sort of negativeness we have been warned about.

I know it isn't jazz, but it has a warm jazzy feel. Now I'm not talking about the classical picking part, I'm talking the "all-finger-picked chords" part. It has this jazzy feel I like. Ok, bad example, but w/e. I'm basically saying I enjoy the scales and notes played in jazz, and there are a good chunk of bands that sit and think about what they are going to play rather than "jamming" and make some interesting, progressive-like music. Although, I can't remember any bands at the top of my head to give reference, because my file with all my jazz music was deleted :erk:

He's Yngwie of the jazz world... He doesn't do much except endlessly wank and noodle in every song, but there are exceptions, like the Mahavishnu Orchestra song "Vital Transformations." Great stuff!

Have you ever heard Elegant Gypsy??? its like Steve Vai meets Carlos Santana... I understand if you heard certain songs that you would think Al Di Meola is a straight wanker... but he defenitly is not... he can make one note sound unbelievable...

now I love this next guy too... but if you wanna here some serious guitar wanking throw on some John McLaughlin... But obviously Birds of Fire and all that jazz is friggin awesome...

omg wtf, I just got Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin mixed up... I was reffering to the album "inner mounting flame" by Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Ya, the only Al Di Meola song I heard was something titled "Subterranean (forgot the other word)" Where he just shreads on the acoustic guitar for 15 minutes. Bleh, wasn't that interesting, although I was impressed of course.

jazz needs improvisation to be jazz. it's a style of music based on improvisation. you're obviously talking about something else

I once had jazz discribed to me by a tutor, as where they all start playing a riff, then take turns at improvising for 10 minutes then come back to playing the same thing. Jazz without improvisation would be about as shit as hip hop.

Metal improvisation doesn't work because no one ever knows what the fuck is going on. If you're seeing a fast death metal band that you've never heard before, you might find a few riffs you like, but it's too hard to digest all at once. I saw Nile before their new one came out, and it was okay hearing their new songs, but I would have thought they were way more awesome had I heard them ahead of time. Metal is all about being precise and calculated a lot of the time. The listening experience requires much more time and focus (generalization). Jamming just doesn't have a place in this. When you're jamming, the form begets the music, but in metal the music begets the form.
