working full time is drainging my soul

I've worked full time for the last 20 years. shifts / permanent nights / 60 hour weeks, done it all. Used all my holidays for touring / recording. worked overtime to pay for equipment and studio time.
There's no feeling quite like working a 12 hour shift, driving 3 hours to play a gig, driving home, getting in at 4am and then going to work at 7am for another 12 hour shift.. :loco:

The job I now have is great tho. Full time, 120 days a year!!! loads of time off.

suck it up!!!

I feel for you guys with crappy jobs that over work you and or underpay you. I have worked in fields as a kid, grocery stores, loading freight, cutting steel etc. About three or four years ago I graduated from college (at 28 years old) as a mechanical engineer. This was largely payed for by the GI bill. No body gave jack, I didn't come from a family that had any kind of money.

I had a job lined up two weeks after graduation. Every year since I have continually made more money and now I am getting another job offer to pay me more. I get to decide who I work for and I make them bid for me. The recession is something I watch on tv effecting other people.

There is nothing which compares to getting a degree in a practical field. Something that involves lots of math, science and engineering. Avoid majors which are fluff. Look into the average salaries and availability of employment in fields of study you are interested in.

I strongly recommend pursuing an education. Everybody wants to play in a band, but the question is what do you want your day job to be? A clerk at a gas station or someone making four times as much money.

This, but it's obviously not for everyone. I'm lucky to be fortunate enough to be almost halfway through my software engineering degree, and there's pretty much a shortage of graduates, with the crazy demand that's coming out of the video game industry in Montreal.

All in all, I really can't complain, but good luck to all you guys! I hope everyone finds their own way to balance work / fun (audio or whatever else you do =))

Looking for work fucking sucks. I moved back to my mom's house Tennessee in August 2009. Haven't been able to find a job since other than working at an auto repair shop/dealer that my brother works at. It pays cash and the hours are kind of 'come in when we need you.' which is not steady pay. I make about minimum wage.

When I'm not doing that I play in an original southern rock band that also plays covers to make gas money, and also repair music gear via craigslist and some local music stores. It would seem I would be making good money with all of this, but unfortunately, I can hardly afford to order parts for the repair business (which pisses customers off because it takes forever to fix their shit!).

I have a wide range of skills covering a ton of ground, but since I don't have the papers to prove it I don't get the job. For example, my pal works tech support at a medical software joint here in town making at least $14/hr. That's amazing money to me. He worked for about a year trying to talk the owner into hiring me and even got me an interview. But the guy that didn't know how to do shit got hired because he had some useless certification. It's bullshit.

Van is busted. Desoldering iron and pump broke last Thursday. Two albums to finish and a huge pile of shit to repair and order parts for. I have $15.

FMYLIFE.

just goes to show how far our economy has gone down the shitter...i used to know dudes in high school in the mid 90s making $12/hr. at burger king, and now a majority of americans are being asked to take care of themselves and their families making that or less

gotta say i'm with midgetdonkeys on this one...really the only way to be close to guaranteeing yourself a substantial income nowadays is with a degree in either some sort of technical field or medicine. there's a reason why so many engineers/scientists/doctors/etc. in the US are from overseas, and it's because countries like india are pumping out scientists and doctors left and right, while americans are getting degrees in a bunch of bullshit. i read an article a while back stating that in one recent year...07 or 08...the US had 10x as many college graduates in physical education as in engineering! does anyone think there's really that much of a demand out there for PE teachers??
